How to Build an EASY DIY Mobile Workbench

Today, we’re diving into an exciting woodworking project created by Sarah from Woodshop Diaries. This mobile workbench features drawers and a unique flip top design, perfect for any DIY enthusiast looking to optimize their workspace.

Materials:

  • (7) 2x4x8 boards (add 2 more if you want the flip open top)
  • (2) 4×8 sheets ¾″ plywood
  • (1) 4×8 sheet ¼″ plywood
  • 1 ¼″ wood screws
  • 1 ¼″ pocket hole screws
  • 2 ½″ wood screws
  • 2 ½″ pocket hole screws
  • (4) pair 16″ ball bearing drawer slides
  • (4) caster wheels
  • Wood glue
  • 48″ piano hinge (optional for flip open top)
  • (4) 3 ½″ door hinges (optional for flip open top)

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Miter saw
  • Jig saw
  • Drill/Driver
  • Pocket hole jig
  • Measuring tape
  • Sandpaper
  • Clamps

Step 1: Assemble the Workbench Legs

Start by cutting eight 2x4s to 31 inches to create the legs of your workbench. Since this bench will see a lot of use, make sure to sand each piece to avoid splinters. Pair up the pieces and glue and screw them together to form four sturdy legs.

Step 2: Design the Workbench Frame

Using the MakeByMe program, sketch out your workbench design. This tool helps visualize your project and generates a materials and cut list. Once you have your design, start building the frame with more 2x4s, using pocket holes and screws for assembly.

Step 3: Attach the Caster Wheels

Once the frame is built, flip it upside down to attach the caster wheels. Pre-drill and secure each wheel to the corners using screws and washers, ensuring they are stable and ready for movement.

Step 4: Cut and Install Plywood Panels

Next, break down your plywood sheets using a circular saw. Cut pieces for the side panels and center support for the drawers. Use pocket holes to secure these plywood pieces into the workbench frame.

Step 5: Install Drawer Slides

To prepare for the drawers, install the drawer slides into the sections created by the side panels and center support. Make sure they are level and secure.

Step 6: Build the Drawer Boxes

Cut plywood pieces to create four identical drawer boxes. Use pocket holes to assemble the boxes, and attach a quarter-inch plywood base to each using glue and staples.

Step 7: Add Drawer Fronts

Once the drawer boxes are installed, cut and attach the drawer fronts. Use shims to ensure even spacing around the edges for a professional finish.

Step 8: Install the Middle Shelf

Cut the middle shelf to fit over the drawers, making sure to notch out corners to accommodate the legs. Secure it in place using screws through the top panel into the plywood framing.

Step 9: Add the Flip Top

For the final touch, install a piano hinge on the top panel to create the flip top feature. Cut and attach braces to support the top when flipped open, allowing for easy access to storage underneath.
