Looking for a beginner-friendly woodworking project? This walnut nightstand was designed and built by Old Guy Woodworks, and it’s a perfect addition to any bedroom.
Materials and Tools Needed
- 1 sheet of walnut plywood
- 5/4 inch walnut for legs
- Drawer lock bit
- Pocket hole jig
- Table saw or track saw
- Miter saw
- Router with roundover bit
- Clamps
- Sanding materials
- Natural oil finish
Step 1: Cut the Legs
Begin by cutting the legs from the 5/4 inch walnut. You’ll need four pairs. To prevent them from sticking together, use packing tape between the pairs during the gluing process. After gluing, let them sit overnight.
Step 2: Prepare the Legs
Once the legs are dry, square them up and cut them to length. Use a bandsaw with a taper jig to create a taper on two sides of each leg. Round the edges using a router with an eighth-inch roundover bit.
Step 3: Cut Side Panels
Next, cut the side panels from one piece of walnut plywood to ensure that the grain matches. Be sure to cut the right panel first, followed by the piece for the drawers, and then the left panel. This will help maintain a consistent grain pattern throughout the piece.
Step 4: Assemble the Frame
Now, assemble the frame for the nightstand. Use a half-inch piece of plywood as the base and attach the legs using pocket holes for a secure fit. Ensure that the reveal is correct using spacer blocks.
Step 5: Make the Drawers
To create the drawers, cut all pieces to width first to minimize tear-out when using the drawer lock bit. Assemble the drawers using the same technique as the frame, ensuring they are square.
Step 6: Apply Finish
Once your nightstand is assembled, apply a natural oil finish to enhance the walnut’s depth. Allow it to dry overnight before applying a clear finish for added protection.
Step 7: Final Assembly
Finally, mount the drawers using half-inch maple guides to keep them square. Ensure that the grain matches on the drawer faces for a polished look.
And there you have it! Your walnut nightstand is complete and ready for use. If you enjoyed this project!
