Trent Tribe has created an easy and budget-friendly DIY project: a hat or coat rack that can be made for just $20. This project is perfect for anyone looking to add a practical yet stylish piece of decor to their home. With simple materials and straightforward steps, even beginners can achieve great results!

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 1×4 yellow pine boards (8 feet long)
  • 1×3.5 boards (cut to 10.5 inches)
  • Brad nailer (1.25-inch brad nails)
  • Table saw (for ripping boards in half)
  • Sander
  • Wood stain or paint (optional)
  • Hooks for hanging (optional)

Step 1: Cut Your Boards

Start by cutting the yellow pine boards to a length of 3 feet. These will serve as the main structure of your coat rack. The width of the boards should be approximately 10.5 inches. This is crucial because while the boards are labeled as 1×4, they actually measure 3.5 inches in width.

Step 2: Prepare the Boards

Once you’ve cut the boards, sand them down to ensure a smooth finish. It’s important to have the sanded sides facing out when assembling the rack.

Step 3: Assemble the Rack Structure

Now, take the cut boards and place them together. You’ll need to rip additional 1×4 boards in half and use them as support on the top and bottom of your main structure. Make sure all edges are flush before securing them with a brad nailer.

Step 4: Add the Top Shelf

For the top shelf, cut a board to about 38 inches long. This length allows the shelf to overhang slightly on each side. Attach the shelf using brad nails, making sure everything is straight and secure.

Step 5: Space and Attach Hooks

Decide where you want to place your hooks. For a rustic look, you can choose to space them out evenly. Typically, you would want to space the hooks about 3 inches apart, leaving around 7.5 inches between each set of hooks for ample hanging space.

Step 6: Stain or Paint the Rack

After assembling the rack and securing all the hooks, it’s time to finish it. You can choose to stain or paint the rack based on your preference. This step adds a nice touch and can enhance the overall look of your coat rack.
