This covered sandbox with integrated bench seats is designed and constructed by Chase Gilroy from Gilroy Vlogs. This project is perfect for backyard play and is easy enough for beginners to tackle. In this guide, you’ll find a detailed step-by-step tutorial along with the materials and tools needed to create your very own sandbox.

Materials and Tools Needed
- 2 pieces of 1×8 at 47 1/2 inches
- 2 pieces of 1×8 at 46 inches
- 12 pieces of 1×4 at 47 1/2 inches
- 4 pieces of 2×4 at 12 1/2 inches
- 4 pieces of 2×4 at 7 1/2 inches
- 8 pieces of 3-inch strap hinges
- 3/4 inch screws (for hinges)
- 2 inch screws (for attaching handles)
- 2 1/2 inch galvanized screws
Step 1: Assemble the Base
Start by taking the two 47 1/2 inch 1×8 boards and the two 46 inch 1×8 boards. At each end of the 47 1/2 inch boards, inset the 46 inch boards by 2 and 3/4 inches. Use an 8-inch drill bit and a 2 and 1/2 inch screw to secure the corners.

Step 2: Create the Seat Base
Next, take two of the 1×4 boards and set them over the inset, spacing them half an inch apart. Use a spacer block for consistent spacing without the hassle of measuring each time.

Step 3: Build the Armrests
Using two more 1×4 boards, create armrests by ensuring they are inset enough to avoid interference with the base. Utilize spacers to maintain the correct spacing and ensure that the armrests are flush with the base.

Step 4: Attach the Seat Base to the Base
Lay the seat base on the sandbox base, ensuring that the end that is flush with the handrail is facing the front. Use spacers for even spacing and mark where the hinges will go, falling exactly 9 inches in from the edge.

Step 5: Secure the Back of the Bench
Take two of the 1×4 boards and line them up without any spacing. This will be the back of your bench. Attach it using 2-inch screws to ensure that the screws do not penetrate through the other side.

Step 6: Install the Hinges
Measure 4 and 1/2 inches from the edge for the hinge placement on both sides. Draw a guideline for accurate placement. Attach the hinges using the previously marked spots.

Step 7: Add Handles
For the final step, place two handles on each side for easy access to the sandbox. This will make it simple for kids to open and close the sandbox.

Final Touches
Once the sandbox is assembled, consider sanding it down for a smoother finish. You can also seal and finish the wood to enhance durability, especially if it will be placed on grass. For added functionality, feel free to lay down landscape fabric at the bottom before filling it with sand.
