This propane fire pit coffee table was designed and built by John from John Builds It. Follow this step-by-step guide to create your own unique fire pit table that not only looks great but also adds warmth to your outdoor space.
Materials and Tools Needed
- 3/4 inch melamine for the table form
- Concrete countertop mix
- 100% silicone sealant
- Cedar wood for the table base
- Pocket hole screws
- Plastic nail-in feet
- Propane fire pit insert
- Green glass fire rocks
- Tools: table saw, drill, mallet, magnesium float, measuring tools, and mixing bucket
Step 1: Build the Concrete Table Top Form
Start by constructing the form for the concrete table top using 3/4 inch melamine. Melamine is ideal for this because it is smooth and prevents the concrete from sticking.
Step 2: Create the Void for the Fire Pit Insert
Next, create a void in the form where the fire pit insert will sit. Wrap the corners in seam tape to prevent concrete from soaking into the melamine edges.
Step 3: Seal the Corners
Seal all corners with silicone sealant and smooth them out using a round cake fondant tool to achieve rounded edges on the concrete.
Step 4: Mix and Pour the Concrete
Mix the concrete according to the instructions, and fill the form halfway. Place mesh reinforcement into the mix and then continue to fill the form. Vibrate the concrete to eliminate air pockets.
Step 5: Build the Table Base
While the concrete cures, start building the table base using cedar. Cut the legs from a 4×4 cedar post and assemble the mainframe using pocket hole screws for a sturdy build.
Step 6: Add Additional Framing
Add framing to the base to support the propane tank. This design allows for a lower table height, making it comfortable for relaxing.
Step 7: Wrap the Base with Slats
Wrap the base with horizontal slats, ensuring a quarter-inch spacing between them. Apply oil to the edges of the slats before installation.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
Install plastic nail-in feet to protect the wood from moisture. Finally, attach the access door for the propane tank using slats glued and screwed to the back.
Step 9: De-mold the Concrete Top
After the concrete has cured, de-mold the table top and address any imperfections with a slurry mix to fill voids.
Step 10: Final Assembly and Enjoy!
Assemble the table and fill the fire pit with green glass fire rocks. Enjoy your new propane fire pit coffee table with family and friends!
