How to Build a Piano Coat Rack

Looking for a fun and functional DIY project? Anika from Anika’s DIY Life has created a fantastic piano coat rack that is not only a stylish addition to your home but also a practical solution for your coat storage needs.

Materials Needed:

  • 2×2 lumber for the stationary pieces
  • 3/8″ dowels (cut into 3-inch lengths)
  • Wood stain (various shades)
  • Wood top coat
  • Wood screws (2-inch long)

Tools Required:

  • Miter saw
  • Power drill
  • Drill press (optional but recommended)
  • Sander (random orbital recommended)
  • Stop block

Step 1: Cutting the Lumber

Start by cutting the 2x2s for the stationary pieces on the miter saw. Set up a stop block for consistent cuts. Remember, always ensure the blade comes to a complete stop before lifting it to avoid any accidents.

Step 2: Creating Hook Pieces

Next, you will need to create the hook pieces. Set up to make 45° cuts on both ends of the hook pieces. Make sure to clamp your stop block tightly to prevent any movement during the cut.

Step 3: Sanding the Edges

After cutting the hook pieces, you will notice that the edges are sharp. To make them safe for hanging items, trim off about 1/4 inch from the ends and sand them smooth.

Step 4: Drilling Holes for Dowels

Measure and mark the locations for the dowel holes on the bottom of the hooks. It’s crucial to have straight holes. If you’re struggling with this, using a drill press can help ensure accuracy.

Step 5: Sanding the Components

Once all pieces are cut, it’s time to sand them. Start with 150 grit sandpaper and finish with 220 grit to smooth out any rough spots.

Step 6: Assembling the Rack

Lay out all the pieces to visualize how the coat rack will look. Mark the locations for the holes to ensure everything lines up correctly. Drill the necessary holes in the stationary pieces for the dowels.

Step 7: Staining the Wood

Before assembling, it’s time to stain the pieces. Anika used various shades to create a unique look. Ensure you apply a top coat after the stain dries for added durability.

Step 8: Final Assembly

With everything dried, it’s time to assemble the coat rack. Use a French cleat for hanging it on the wall, ensuring that it is securely attached.
