In this tutorial, Kelley from Waterfall Woodworking shares a detailed guide on how to create a stunning modern wood shelf. The process is broken down into two main parts: making the shelves and constructing the frame.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Cherry wood (or wood of your choice)
  • Miter saw
  • Table saw
  • Router with round over bit
  • Star Bond adhesive
  • Brad nailer
  • Sandpaper (220 grit)
  • Walrus oil furniture finish
  • Flexible drill bit extender
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cutting the Shelves

The project begins with cutting the shelves to size. Kelley measures the desired length and cuts the wood on a miter saw. After that, the final width is adjusted using a table saw.

Step 2: Rounding the Edges

To achieve a polished look, Kelley adds a round over to each side of the shelves using a router. This detail enhances the overall aesthetic of the shelves.

Step 3: Constructing the Frame

Next, Kelley moves on to the frame, again using cherry wood. The pieces are cut to size using both the miter and table saws. The frame will hold the shelves securely in place.

Step 4: Creating Notches for the Shelves

Each shelf will sit in notches cut into the frame. Kelley carefully measures and adjusts the table saw to create these notches, ensuring a snug fit for the shelves.

Step 5: Assembling the Frame

After all cuts are completed, Kelley assembles the frame using clamps for a dry fit. This allows her to ensure everything aligns correctly before adding glue and nails.

Step 6: Sanding and Finishing

Once assembled, the frame is sanded to a smooth finish and then treated with Walrus oil to enhance the natural beauty of the cherry wood.

Step 7: Attaching the Frame to the Wall

To secure the shelf, Kelley drills pilot holes and uses a flexible drill bit extender to reach tight spots. This step is crucial for ensuring the frame is firmly attached to the wall.

Step 8: Inserting the Shelves

Finally, the shelves are slid into the notches of the frame, allowing for easy adjustments to their positioning. The finished product is a modern, elegant shelf that adds character to any room.

This project not only allows for creativity but also provides a chance to learn new woodworking skills. Kelley is thrilled with the outcome and encourages others to try building their own modern wood shelf.
