Tools:

Step 1: Cut the Lumber
Start by cutting your 2×4 board down into smaller sections and then rip these into 1 ½ inch wide strips on the table saw. You will need a total of six 2x2s for the legs and top supports.
Step 2: Assemble the U-Shaped Frames
Lay out the pieces on your workbench, mark out your dowel locations, and drill dowel holes. Assemble the frames with glue, ensuring everything is secure.
Step 3: Cut and Prepare the Plywood Panels
Next, cut two side panels from the plywood to fit between the frames. Use a fine finish blade on your saw to avoid splintering.
Step 4: Install the Side Panels
Use pocket holes and screws to attach the side panels to the frames. Make sure to place the pocket holes where they will be hidden by the shelves and drawer later.
Step 5: Add the Shelves
Cut two plywood panels for the shelves. Apply edge banding to the front of the top shelf. Install the shelves using pocket holes and screws.
Step 6: Install the Drawer Slides
Install 14-inch ball bearing drawer slides into the nightstands, ensuring they are inset appropriately from the front of the legs.
Step 7: Build the Drawer Box
For the drawer box, use birch plywood scraps. Cut and assemble the drawer box using pocket holes and screws, then install it into the nightstand.
Step 8: Attach the Drawer Front
Cut a drawer front to fit the opening and use shims to help with the spacing as you secure it from the inside.
Step 9: Add the Top Panel
Cut a ¾ inch plywood panel for the top, applying edge banding to the sides and front. Secure it to the nightstand using wood screws.
Step 10: Stain and Finish
Stain the nightstands with Minwax Weathered Oak to match the storage bed. After the stain dries, apply a few coats of Minwax Polycrylic clear coat for protection.
Final Thoughts
These nightstands are a perfect addition to your bedroom. The simple design allows for plenty of storage while maintaining a modern look.
