Build a Modern Farmhouse Desk

This modern farmhouse desk project was created by Anika from Anika’s DIY Life, and it’s perfect for any home office.

With a simple design and beginner-friendly instructions, you can build your own desk using basic woodworking techniques.

Materials:

  • 2×2 Lumber
  • 1×4 Lumber
  • Plywood (Red Oak or your choice)
  • Wood screws
  • Pocket hole screws
  • Wood glue
  • Drawer sliders
  • Knobs or pulls for drawers

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Nail gun
  • Clamps
  • Carpentry square

Step 1: Build the Frame

Start by building the frames for the legs and shelves using the 2×2 lumber. This will form the sturdy base of your desk.

Step 2: Attach the Shelves

Next, attach the plywood for the shelves to the front aprons and then to the frame to create the shelving on the right side of the desk.

Step 3: Create the Desk Structure

Attach the long 1×4 aprons using wood screws to create the desk structure. This adds stability and support to your desk.

Step 4: Add Side Aprons

Attach the side aprons using pocket hole screws and wood glue. This is crucial for ensuring your desk is square and level.

Step 5: Measure and Attach Supports

Measure and attach the supports and spaces for the drawers. Make sure everything is level and square for a perfect fit.

Step 6: Build the Drawers

Next, build your drawers and attach the drawer sliders to the spaces you just created. Ensure they glide smoothly.

Step 7: Attach the Desk Top

Place the plywood for the top of the desk and attach it using wood glue and finished nails to secure it in place.

Step 8: Finish the Drawers

Finally, attach the drawer fronts and knobs or pulls of your choice. Now you have a beautiful work desk ready for use!
