How to Build a Ladder Chair

Materials Needed

  • (4) 2x2x8′ pine boards (for legs and rails)
  • (1) 3/4″ plywood sheet (for the seat and steps)
  • (1) Piano hinge (for the folding mechanism)
  • Wood glue
  • Pocket hole screws
  • Wood screws
  • Pocket hole plugs
  • Sanding materials (sander and sandpaper)
  • Paint or stain (optional, for finishing)

Tools Required

  • Compound miter saw or circular saw
  • Drill and drill bits
  • Kreg jig (for pocket holes)
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil

  • Table saw (optional, for cutting plywood)

Step 1: Cut the Legs and Rails

Start by cutting the front legs and front leg rails. For the slanted legs, carefully measure and mark the special angle to be cut using a band saw or jigsaw.

Step 2: Assemble the Front Leg Assembly

Attach the front leg rail to the slanted leg using wood glue and pocket hole screws. Repeat this for both slanted legs. Use a piece of wood to help clamp and hold the rail in place while you drill.

Step 3: Attach the Front Step Rails

Cut and drill pocket holes in the front step rails. Attach these to the legs using scrap wood to position them correctly.

Step 4: Install the Seat and Steps

Cut and attach the front seat rail and the front step rail using glue and pocket hole screws. Mark and cut the cleats for the seat and steps, then drill countersink holes to attach them securely.

Step 5: Assemble the Back Leg and Rails

Cut the back leg and the bottom back rails, then drill pocket holes to attach them together. Repeat this step for the top rails and back stile.

Step 6: Attach the Cleats

Drill countersink holes in each cleat and attach them to the legs using screws. This will provide support for the steps.

Step 7: Final Assembly of the Steps and Seat

Assemble and attach the middle and bottom steps, then cut and install the seat. Use scrap wood to help position the back rails correctly.

Step 8: Add the Folding Mechanism

Stack the two pieces for the back and attach the piano hinge. This is the key to the chair’s transformation into a ladder!

Fill any pocket holes with plugs, trim them flush, and sand the chair for a smooth finish. Apply paint or stain if desired.
