This hidden storage coat rack was built and designed by Remodelaholic, and it’s perfect for keeping your space organized while adding a stylish touch. This tutorial will guide you through the steps to create a wall-mounted coat rack with a secret compartment, ideal for storing keys, sunglasses, and more.
Materials Needed:
- Two 1×3 boards
- One 1×2 board
- Two drawer slides
- Three coat hooks
- Wood stain or paint (optional)
Tools Required:
- Drill
- Saw
- Screwdriver
- Sander
- Measuring tape
Step 1: Cut the Boards
Begin by cutting your boards according to the free cut list and diagram available on Remodelaholic.com. Make sure to sand all the boards to smooth out any rough edges.
Step 2: Drill Pocket Holes
Drill pocket holes in two of the 18-inch 1×3 boards. Use these holes to screw the three boards together, ensuring a sturdy frame for your coat rack.
Step 3: Assemble the Box
For the next part, drill pocket holes in a 9-inch 1×3 piece to attach the front trim later. In the two remaining 18-inch boards, drill pocket holes at each end. Attach these boards to the 9-inch board to form three sides of a box.
Step 4: Add the Divider
Attach the 18-inch 1×2 piece next to one of the 1×3 pieces for later wall attachment. Then, attach the other 9-inch 1×3 piece to complete the box. Notch the shorter remaining 1×3 pieces at the top corner to fit them into the frame securely.
Step 5: Attach the Drawer Slides
Next, stain and paint the boards as desired. Once the finish has dried, attach the large side of the drawer slides to the back of the coat rack face, and the small side to the divider boards, centering the face frame.
Step 6: Add Face Trim and Coat Hooks
Use the previously drilled pocket holes to attach the left face trim piece. Close the door completely and attach the three trim pieces to the door. Measure and mark the locations of the coat hooks, then screw them into the face boards.
Step 7: Mount the Coat Rack
To mount the coat rack, locate two studs in the wall. Place the coat rack over the stud locations at your desired height, check it for level, and then attach it to the wall studs using long screws.
Step 8: Add Finishing Touches
If desired, add interior key hooks or shelves to the hidden compartment for extra organization. Hang up your coat and enjoy your new functional piece!
This hidden storage coat rack is not only a stylish addition to your home but also a practical solution to keep your entryway tidy.
