Floating Shelves with Custom LED Lighting

If you’re looking to elevate your space with some stylish floating shelves, you’re in the right place! This project was designed and created by Salty Woodworking. With simple steps and materials, you can create beautiful shelves that not only look great but also feature programmable LED lighting.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 2×2 lumber
  • 3/4 inch plywood (maple or your choice of wood)
  • Wood glue
  • 2-inch brad nails
  • 2 1/2 inch interior screws
  • LED strips (SK6812 LED strips)
  • LED diffuser
  • WLED controller
  • Milwaukee track saw
  • Miter saw
  • Router with a pattern bit
  • Chisel
  • Sandpaper (180 grit)
  • Rubio Monocoat finish
  • Paint triangles

Step 1: Prepare the Brackets

Start by taking a 2×2 and ripping it into strips about an inch and a half wide. These strips will serve as the brackets for your floating shelves. Leave about an inch of playroom in case your shelf dimensions need adjustment.

Step 2: Assemble the Brackets

Using wood glue and 2-inch brad nails, assemble the brackets. The brad nails act as clamps, while the glue provides the necessary strength.

Step 3: Mount the Brackets

Mount the brackets to the wall, ensuring you hit as many studs as possible for stability. Use 2 1/2 inch interior screws and counter-sync them into the studs.

Step 4: Cut the Plywood for Shelves

For the shelves, you’ll need 3/4 inch plywood. Use the Milwaukee track saw to cut the plywood to your desired width, slightly oversized to allow for scribing against the wall for a perfect fit.

Step 5: Create Miter Folds

Cut 45-degree angles on two opposing sides of the plywood for the miter folds. This will give your shelves a clean, finished look.

Step 6: Glue the Shelves Together

Once all pieces are cut, glue them together using Tight Bond 3. Instead of clamps, use masking tape to hold the pieces in place while the glue dries overnight.

Step 7: Fit the Shelves

After the glue has dried, take the shelves upstairs and fit them onto the brackets. Use a pencil to trace the wall for a precise fit, then trim the shelves accordingly.

Step 8: Prepare for LED Installation

Create a quick template using scrap wood for the LED diffuser channel. Sandwiched between two boards, this will help you achieve the perfect width for the diffusers.

Step 9: Install the LED Strips

Use the SK6812 LED strips for your lighting. These strips are programmable and can be controlled via the WLED controller. Install the strips in the channels and secure them with CA glue.

Step 10: Finish the Shelves

Round over the corners lightly, then sand the shelves with 180 grit sandpaper. Apply Rubio Monocoat finish using paint triangles for an even coat on both sides.
