Getting Started

Marcus begins the process by cutting down 2×2 stock into strips. These strips form the internal brackets that support the shelves while keeping a clean, floating appearance.

Each strip is left slightly long to allow for adjustments during installation. This ensures a tight, flush fit against the wall, which is key to the finished look.

Assembling the Brackets

The brackets are assembled using wood glue and brad nails. While the glue does the real work, the nails hold things in place until everything sets.

This quick and efficient method creates a solid frame for mounting the shelves. It’s a clean and sturdy foundation that supports the weight without visible hardware.

Mounting the Brackets

To secure the brackets to the wall, Marcus drills into the studs for reliable strength. Countersunk screws are used to keep the surface flush and ready for shelf installation.

Mounting directly into studs ensures the shelves won’t sag or shift over time. This is especially important when planning to store items or display decor.

Cutting and Assembling the Shelves

The shelves are made from maple plywood, though other species can be used based on preference. The plywood is ripped down to the needed width and cut slightly long to account for wall adjustments.

Miter cuts are made on the front and sides for a seamless finish. The clean joints make the shelves look like a solid piece rather than a hollow build.

Assembling the Shelf Boxes

Each piece of the shelf is carefully marked and cut to size. Marcus places the board directly over the assembled bracket to get exact measurements without complicated math.

The sides and front are glued in place and secured using masking tape while they dry. This method keeps the joints tight and aligned without clamping pressure.

Adding the LED Channel

To integrate LED lighting, Marcus creates a routing template from scrap wood. This ensures consistency across all shelves when cutting the diffuser channel.

After routing the groove, final cleanup is done with a chisel to refine the edges. The LED strips are inserted later and fit cleanly into the routed channel.

Choosing and Installing LED Strips

Marcus uses programmable LED strips that offer adjustable brightness and color options. These lights can also connect to smart home systems for remote control.

The diffusers are fitted into the channels to soften the light and hide the hardware. The result is a warm, subtle glow that highlights both the shelf and what it holds.

Sanding and Finishing

All corners are rounded slightly for a smooth, professional finish. A fine sanding preps the surface for Rubio Monocoat, which enhances the natural maple grain.

Rubio Monocoat is easy to apply and highly durable, making it a great choice for furniture and shelving. The finish adds both beauty and long-lasting protection.

Final Installation

Once the shelves are finished, they slide over the mounted brackets. A few screws secure them from the back, locking the shelves in place without any visible fasteners.

With the LED lighting installed and the wood finished, the result is clean, modern, and functional. The lighting effect creates a soft ambiance and adds a high-end touch.

Why Take on This Project

Turning simple plywood into modern floating shelves with lighting is a great way to elevate your space. It’s a balance of woodworking skill and creativity that pays off every time you walk into the room.

Whether you’re adding them to a living room, home office, or bedroom, the shelves offer both beauty and utility. The lighting makes them stand out without overwhelming the space.
