EASY DIY Modern Bookshelf | Made from 1 Sheet of Plywood

This project is by Shara from Woodshop Diaries. This DIY project is not only budget-friendly but also allows you to add a personal touch to your home decor.

In this guide, we will walk through the steps to create a modern bookshelf using just one sheet of plywood.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials and Tools

Before you begin, it’s essential to gather all the necessary materials and tools. For this project, you will need:

  • 1 sheet of ¾” plywood (maple is used in this project)
  • 1 ¼” pocket hole screws
  • 1 ¼” wood screws
  • Iron-on edge banding (optional)
  • Wood glue
  • Pocket hole plugs (optional)

As for tools, ensure you have:

  • Circular saw
  • Kreg Rip Cut
  • Miter saw
  • Drill/Driver
  • Pocket hole jig

Step 2: Cutting the Plywood

Start by cutting the plywood sheet into several strips. This is a crucial step as it sets the foundation for your bookshelf. You can refer to the complete cut diagram provided in the building plans.

Begin by ripping two strips from the sheet, each measuring about 10.5 inches wide. These will form the sides of your bookshelf. After that, measure and cut the remaining plywood into three equal-sized strips, roughly nine inches wide. Exact widths are not critical, so slight variations are acceptable.

Using the miter saw, cut the wider strips into one long piece (for one side) and one short piece (for the top and bottom). From the narrower strips, cut a back panel and seven shelves. The dimensions can be customized based on your preferences.

Step 3: Edge Banding (Optional)

Edge banding is an optional step but can significantly enhance the appearance of your bookshelf. It’s a way to finish the plywood edges, making them look neater. This process involves applying iron-on edge banding to the exposed edges of the plywood.

To apply the edge banding, simply iron it onto the edges, ensuring a secure fit. After applying the banding, give everything a light sanding to smooth out any rough edges. This step can be time-consuming, but the end result is worth it.

Step 4: Assembling the Bookshelf Body

Now that your pieces are cut and banded, it’s time to assemble the main body of the bookshelf. Start by drilling pocket holes into the ends of the top and bottom pieces. Using pocket hole screws, connect the top and bottom to the two side pieces to form the bookshelf frame.

Once the main frame is assembled, it’s time to attach the back panel. You can choose to attach it on the back edge or install it inside the frame. For this project, the back panel was fitted inside the frame. Trim it to fit, center it, and secure it with wood screws.

Step 5: Installing the Shelves

With the main body ready, the next step is to install the shelves. There are various methods for this, but for this project, pocket holes were used again. Drill pocket holes into the ends of each shelf, then install them into the sides of the bookshelf.

When installing the shelves, it’s essential to ensure they are square. Use a speed square to check alignment and secure each shelf in place. You can choose how many shelves to install and their spacing based on your storage needs.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

After all the shelves are installed, it’s time for the finishing touches. Flip the bookshelf upside down and use wood glue along with pocket hole plugs to fill in the pocket holes. This step is optional, but it can create a cleaner look.

Once the glue has dried, sand the plugs smooth and apply a clear coat to finish. This will protect the wood and enhance the natural beauty of the maple plywood. For this project, staining was skipped as the natural color was already appealing.

Step 7: Final Reveal and Placement

After the finish has dried, your modern bookshelf is complete! It’s ready to be filled with books, decor, or anything else you desire. However, due to its tall and narrow design, it’s advisable to secure the bookshelf to the wall to prevent it from tipping over.

In this project, the bookshelf was designed to showcase model cars, but it can serve multiple purposes in any space. Whether it’s in your living room, office, or bedroom, this DIY bookshelf adds style and functionality.
