Double Ended Flip-Top Workbench

This double ended flip-top workbench was designed and built by Pneumatic Addict, and it’s perfect for organizing your benchtop tools like a planer, sander, or drill press.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • 2×4 lumber
  • 3/4″ plywood (2 sheets)
  • 5/8″ carriage bolts (4)
  • 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws
  • 1 1/4″ wood screws
  • 3″ casters
  • Dowel rod (1 1/8″ x 30″)
  • Drill and drill bits
  • DeWALT cordless framing nailer
  • DeWALT brushless circular saw
  • Kreg pocket hole jig

Step 1: Build the Frame

Start by attaching side rails to four 28.5″ 2×4 legs. Use a Kreg jig to drill pocket holes for the joints that are hard to reach with a nail gun.

Step 2: Connect the Side Assemblies

Once both side assemblies are built, connect them using 2×4 stretchers. Make sure to secure them with pocket hole screws for added stability.

Step 3: Reinforce the Bottom

To reinforce the bottom, add three more stretchers and then flip the frame over to attach the casters.

Step 4: Create the Flip Top Work Surfaces

Find the center of the two by two center bars and drill a 7/8″ hole through them. Attach end pieces to the inner frame without using a nail gun to avoid breaking them.

Step 5: Add the Plywood Panels

Cut the plywood panels to size and secure them over the inner frame using wood screws.

Step 6: Install the Flip Tops

Align the flip tops with the frame and slide the dowel through to secure them in place. This may require some persuasion with a hammer.

Step 7: Lock the Flip Tops

To lock the flip tops, drill a hole through the outer frame into the inner frame and insert a carriage bolt as a locking pin.
