Step 4: Torch the Wood

Using a torch, lightly burn the edges of each piece to give them a rustic look. You can choose how dark you want the burn to be.

Step 5: Stain the Pieces

Now it’s time to stain! Use navy blue for the union and alternate red and white for the stripes. Apply multiple coats for a richer color.

Step 6: Add the Stars

Using a union stencil, spray paint the stars onto the union section. Make sure to cover any areas that won’t have complete stars.

Step 7: Seal the Flag

Once the stars are dry, apply a coat of sealer to protect the surface. This will keep the colors vibrant and prevent smudging.

Step 8: Assemble the Flag

Flip the flag over and cut pieces of 1×3 lumber to reinforce the back. Use wood glue and a brad nailer to secure everything in place.
