This vertical ladder planter project was created by Houseful of Handmade, and it’s perfect for anyone wanting to grow plants in a small area.
With five large planter boxes, you can cultivate herbs, flowers, and more!
Materials and Tools Needed:
- Five planter boxes (6″x24″ resin window boxes)
- Two stair risers (5 steps)
- One 2″x4″x12′ board (pressure treated)
- Cedar fence pickets (for creating planter shelves)
- Drill
- Kreg 720 Pro Pocket Hole Jig
- 1 1/4″ blue-kote screws
- Right angle drill bit
- Finish nail gun
- Landscape fabric
- Paint (optional)
Step 1: Build the Planter Boxes
Start by cutting out all the pieces for the sides and bottoms of the planter boxes. You’ll need to add pocket holes to both ends of the side and bottom pieces to assemble the boxes.
Step 2: Assemble the Boxes
Using the Kreg jig, drill pocket holes and attach the bottom pieces between the side pieces. Ensure the pocket holes are positioned for easy access.
Step 3: Cut the Sides
Next, cut the 2x4s at a 10-degree angle for the legs of the ladder. Make sure both sides are mirrored for a proper fit.
Step 4: Attach the Planter Box Bases
Measure and mark where the planter boxes will sit on the ladder sides. Use the Kreg Quick Flip tool to pre-drill and attach the bases at a 10-degree angle.
Step 5: Sand and Paint
Once the structure is assembled, sand it down and paint it to your desired color. This will enhance the overall look of your planter.
Step 6: Create Planter Shelves
Using cedar fence pickets, create the shelves for the planter. Cut them to size and attach them with a finish nail gun.
Step 7: Add Landscape Fabric
Place landscape fabric in the bottom of each planter box to prevent soil from draining out while still allowing water to escape.
Final Step: Plant Your Greenery!
Your vertical ladder planter is now ready for planting! Fill each box with soil and your choice of plants. Enjoy your new garden feature!
