DIY Pot and Plant Stand Using Simple Tools

Looking for a woodworking project that’s easy and budget-friendly? This pot and plant stand was created by Josh Wright from Josh Wright Woodworking, and it’s perfect for beginners. Using just a few affordable tools, you can create a stylish and functional piece for your home or garden.

Materials & Tools Needed

  • 1 standard 8-foot 2×4
  • 1 $15 plane
  • 1 $20 pull saw
  • 1 $10 set of chisels
  • Wood glue
  • Sandpaper (220 grit)
  • Polyurethane for finishing

Step 1: Cut the Sections for the Pot

Start by cutting three 12.5-inch sections from the 2×4. These will form the outside of the pot.

Step 2: Rip the Sections into Strips

Next, rip these sections into 3/8-inch strips. In between cutting each strip, use the plane to create a flatter surface for marking the lines for the next cut.

Step 3: Taper and Bevel the Strips

Once all the strips are cut, taper each piece at a 5-degree angle and bevel one side at a 15-degree angle using the plane. You should have a total of 24 pieces for the pot.

Step 4: Assemble the Pot

Glue the strips together to form the outside of the pot. Round over the edges where the pieces meet using the plane.

Step 5: Create the Bottom of the Pot

Cut an 8.5-inch section from the 2×4 and rip it into half-inch strips to glue up into a panel for the bottom of the pot. Mark out a circle and use the pull saw to remove most of the waste, then shape it with the plane.

Step 6: Sand and Finish the Pot

Sand the pot with 220 grit sandpaper before applying a coat of polyurethane to finish.

Step 7: Cut Sections for the Plant Stand

Now, cut three 11-inch sections at a 5-degree angle on either side. Cut one more piece at 10 inches with no angle. The angled pieces will be the legs, and the straight piece will be the cross brace that holds the pot up.

Step 8: Assemble the Legs

Glue the legs together to create one piece and cut notches in each leg to hold the cross brace.

Step 9: Attach the Cross Brace
