How to Build a Modern Planter Box with 2x4s

In this tutorial, SEB TECH DIY walks through the steps to create a stunning modern planter box using 2×4 framing lumber.

Materials:

  • 4 pieces of 2x4x8 lumber
  • Outdoor wood glue
  • Plastic liner for the interior
  • Geotextile fabric
  • Exterior wood stain (color of choice)
  • Trim pieces for the interior (optional)

Tools:

  • Table saw
  • Kreg jig for pocket holes
  • Belt sander
  • Orbital sander
  • Mouse palm sander
  • Drill
  • Stapler
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cutting the Lumber

Start by cutting the 2x4s to the required lengths: four pieces at 12 inches and twenty pieces at 13.5 inches. To achieve a modern look, use a table saw to rip cut all pieces to a final width of 3 inches.

Step 2: Making Pocket Holes

Next, create pocket holes in the lumber. For the four 12-inch pieces that will form the bottom of the planter box, drill four pocket holes in three pieces and six in the last piece. Then, make two pocket holes on the sides of the planter.

Step 3: Assembling the Base

Begin assembling the base by screwing the pieces together using pocket hole screws. After the base is complete, assemble the sides in a similar manner, ensuring to use clamps to keep everything aligned.

Step 4: Complete the Structure

Assemble all five parts of the planter box upside down, starting with the top part. This orientation helps prevent water from trapping in the pocket holes. Continue to clamp and screw the parts together until the entire structure is complete.

Step 5: Adding Legs

Flip the planter over and attach legs made from 2x4s to raise it slightly off the ground. Secure them using outdoor wood glue.

Step 6: Hiding Pocket Holes

To hide the visible pocket holes on the top row, cut small pieces of wood, glue them into the holes, and trim them flush with a multi-tool once the glue is dry.

Step 7: Sanding the Surface

Sanding is crucial for a smooth finish. Start with an 80-grit sandpaper using a belt sander, followed by an orbital sander with 120-grit paper to remove scratches. Finish with a mouse palm sander to smooth the top and inside edges.

Step 8: Staining the Wood

Apply a coat of exterior wood stain to enhance the look of the planter. Allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat for a richer color.

Step 9: Adding a Plastic Liner

To protect the wood from water damage, add a plastic liner inside the box. Fold the liner to fit easily before placing it inside the planter.

Step 10: Draining the Planter

Drill a drainage hole in the liner, ensuring it matches the size of the drainage pipe. Secure the liner in place using a stapler, only tacking the top edge.

Step 11: Adding Trim and Final Touches

Finally, add trim pieces to the inside of the planter to improve aesthetics and further prevent water from getting behind the liner. Place a geotextile fabric over the drainage hole to keep dirt from clogging it.
