DIY Outdoor Lounge Chair from 2x6s

Looking for a quick and easy outdoor furniture project? This outdoor lounge chair was designed and built by Benjamin Uyeda from HomeMadeModern, and it’s perfect for any backyard or patio.

Materials:

  • 2 – 2×6 boards (36 inches for the seat, 30 inches for the back)
  • 2 – 2×6 boards (18 inches for the legs)
  • Waterproof wood glue
  • CABOT Solid Color Acrylic Stain and Sealer in Pewter Gray

Tools:

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Orbital sander
  • Kreg Pocket Hole Jig
  • Microfiber rags
  • Purdy roller and brush

Step 1: Cut the Wood

Start by cutting your 2×6 boards into the necessary lengths: 36 inches for the seat, 30 inches for the back, and 18 inches for the legs. Use the semi-triangle method by drawing a diagonal line across the rectangles to create triangular pieces.

Step 2: Prepare the Legs

Use the Kreg pocket hole jig to drill holes in the short pieces that will serve as the front legs. Make sure to place the pocket holes on the inside so they are hidden.

Step 3: Set the Angle

Use the legs to set the angle of your circular saw blade for cutting the front part of the chair’s seat. This will ensure the cuts match the angle of the legs.

Step 4: Assemble the Seat

Cut the side profile pieces and attach them using the pocket holes. Sand the pieces with 150 grit sandpaper to prepare for staining.

Step 5: Stain the Wood

Remove any dust with a clean microfiber rag before applying the CABOT stain. Use a Purdy roller for a quick and even application, and wipe off any excess with a clean rag.

Step 6: Assemble the Chair

Once the stain is dry, assemble the chair by driving screws through the pocket holes. Use clamps to hold the pieces in place while you work.

Step 7: Final Touches

Adjust the angle of the backrest to your preference and add any additional support boards if desired. This will help the chair withstand outdoor use.

Finalizing the assembly of the chair

This project is not only simple but also customizable. You can adjust the lengths of the pieces to fit your style. In about two and a half hours, you can create a beautiful outdoor lounge chair that enhances your space.
