Materials:
- Cedar fence pickets
- 2×2 boards
- Wood glue
- Finish nails
- Outdoor wood glue
- Deck stain
Tools:
- Miter saw
- Kreg Jig 720
- Power drill/driver
- Table saw
- Sander (various grits)
Step 1: Cut the Cedar Fence Pickets
Start by cutting the cedar fence pickets into the necessary pieces for your planter boxes. This will help you only sand the parts that need it.
Step 2: Sand the Boards
Sand the cut boards with 60 grit sandpaper, followed by 80, 120, and finally 150 grit for a smooth finish. If you have a planer, run the boards through it to reduce roughness.
Step 3: Assemble the Planter Boxes
Using outdoor wood glue and finish nails, assemble the bottom of the planter box first. Attach the sideboards and ensure everything holds together well.
Step 4: Add Supports
Add 2×2 boards inside the planter box for additional support, then attach the remaining boards to finish the box.
Step 5: Build the Stands
For the stands, cut down 2×4 boards into 2x2s to save on costs. Assemble the planter stands using pocket holes for a secure fit.
Step 6: Stain and Finish
Stain your planter boxes with deck stain to seal them and enhance their appearance. You can also paint the stands for a polished look.
Step 7: Final Assembly
Once everything is dry, place the planter boxes into their respective stands. If desired, add screws for added stability.
