This stunning live edge side table was created by Justin and Jess DIY, and it’s perfect for adding a touch of nature to your home decor. With a few simple steps and materials, you can transform a wood cookie slab into a functional piece of art.
Materials Needed
- Wood cookie slab
- Vinegar (for bug treatment)
- Mallet
- Chisel
- Router
- Router sled
- Sanding paper (40, 80, 120, 220 grit)
- Polyurethane finish
- Legs (purchased separately)
- Screws (included with legs)
Step 1: Prepare the Wood Cookie Slab
Start by ensuring your wood cookie slab has been drying properly. In this case, it’s been drying for over a month. Before beginning the project, spray the slab with a vinegar solution to eliminate any bug activity.
Step 2: Remove the Bark
Using a mallet and chisel, carefully remove the bark from the wood cookie slab. This step is optional; if you prefer to keep the bark for a rustic look, you can skip this part.
Step 3: Router the Slab
Set up your DIY router rig to ensure you have a flat and level surface. This is crucial for achieving a smooth finish. Take your time and work slowly, making several passes with the router until the cookie slab is about an inch and a quarter thick.
Step 4: Sand the Surface
Once the routing is complete, begin sanding the slab. Start with 40 grit sandpaper and gradually work your way up to 220 grit. Mark the surface with pencil marks to track your sanding progress.
Step 5: Fill Any Cracks
If there are any cracks in the slab, use a wood chisel to clean them out. You can also sand the edges of these cracks to ensure a smooth finish. Make sure to check for any splinters that may need to be sanded down.
Step 6: Apply Polyurethane Finish
Once the sanding is complete, apply a coat of clear satin polyurethane to the top and sides of the slab. Allow it to dry before sanding it lightly and applying additional coats for a durable finish.
Step 7: Attach the Legs
After the final coat of polyurethane has dried, it’s time to attach the legs. Position the legs according to your preference and secure them with screws. Ensure they are evenly spaced for stability.
Step 8: Final Touches
Once the legs are securely attached, your live edge side table is complete! This project not only enhances your space but also showcases the natural beauty of the wood.
