DIY Kid’s Table and Chairs Project

In this exciting DIY project, Woodbrew has created a charming kid’s table and chairs set using mostly scraps from previous projects. This guide will walk you through the steps to build this functional and stylish furniture piece that is perfect for any child’s play area.

Materials Needed

  • 1 sheet of plywood
  • 3-4 pieces of 2×2 lumber
  • Edge banding
  • Paint (optional)
  • Wood glue
  • Screws
  • Finish head screws
  • Clear coat finish

Tools Required

  • Table saw
  • Miter saw
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • CNC machine (optional for customization)

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

To kick off this project, the team at Woodbrew decided to use leftover scraps from previous projects. If you don’t have scraps, you can easily complete this project with a single sheet of plywood and a few 2x2s. The project is repetitive, making it ideal for using a table saw to set up for multiple cuts efficiently.

Step 2: Cutting the Pieces

Start by cutting all the necessary pieces for the table and chairs. The table base requires several 45-degree angle cuts, which are best done using a miter saw. For uniformity, cut one board correctly and use it as a template for tracing the others.

Step 3: Notching the Seats

Once all pieces are cut, focus on detailed parts like notching the seats. This can be done using a table saw, raising the blade to ensure the cuts are clean and precise. Alternatively, a jigsaw or handsaw can be used if a table saw is not available.

Step 4: Creating Pocket Holes

Next, drill pocket holes into the smaller boards. Each board should have two pocket holes on each end and one perpendicular pocket hole for attaching chair seats.

Step 5: Adding Edge Banding

Apply edge banding to all exposed sides of the plywood. Woodbrew recommends using a product with 3M adhesive for ease of application. This step not only enhances aesthetics but also protects the edges.

Step 6: Customizing Seat Backs

For a personal touch, Woodbrew used an X-Carve CNC machine to customize the seat backs. This machine is user-friendly and cost-effective, making it a great investment for those interested in CNC projects.

Step 7: Painting the Parts

After customizing, it’s time to paint the parts. Woodbrew chose white for the tabletop and seat backs, but this step is optional. A few coats of paint will give a polished look.

Step 8: Sanding

This project involves a lot of sanding to ensure all edges are smooth and safe for kids. Take your time with this step as it is crucial for the final finish.

Step 9: Assembling the Chairs

Begin assembling the chairs by connecting the fronts and backs. Use spacers to ensure everything aligns correctly. The assembly is straightforward, with all pieces being identical, making it easy to connect them.

Step 10: Assembling the Table

Next, move on to the table assembly. Start by adding support blocks and then attach the stretchers to the legs. Be mindful of the orientation to avoid mistakes.

Step 11: Final Assembly

With the base complete, attach the tabletop using pocket hole screws. Ensure everything is centered and secured tightly.

Step 12: Finishing Touches

Finally, attach the seat backs and seats to the chairs using finish head screws for a secure fit. Woodbrew used Total Boat’s clear finish for added durability, perfect for kids’ furniture.
