Why Choose Hexagon Shelves?
Hexagon shelves stand out from typical straight-lined shelving options. Their honeycomb shape adds a unique visual interest that fits well in modern, rustic, or minimalist interiors.
They also offer flexibility in arrangement, so you can create a wall display that feels custom to your room. Whether used alone or grouped together, they’re a great way to add personality to a wall.
Materials and Setup
Taylor uses 1×4 boards for this project, keeping the materials simple and affordable. About six 6-foot boards are needed to create a full set of hexagons.
The first step is to set the table saw blade to just under 60 degrees. This ensures that when the angled ends are joined together, they form a tight and clean hexagon.
Cutting the Pieces
To make the boards easier to handle, they’re first cut in half. Each hexagon consists of six pieces cut to 6 inches in length, resulting in a total of 30 pieces for five shelves.
If you prefer larger or smaller shelves, the length of each cut can be adjusted. Consistency in measurement is key so the pieces fit together evenly.
Assembling the Hexagons
Each piece is joined using wood glue and 1.25-inch brad nails. To help maintain proper alignment, a scrap block cut to the same angle is held against the joint while nailing.
This technique helps prevent shifting and keeps the corners tight. After all six sides are attached, any excess glue is wiped away with a damp cloth before it dries.
Sanding and Staining
After allowing the glue to cure for 24 hours, each hexagon is sanded smooth using 120-grit sandpaper. Sanding helps round off sharp edges and prepare the wood for finish.
Taylor applies a special walnut stain using a foam brush to bring out the grain and color of the wood. Once the stain has dried, two light coats of polyurethane are added for a subtle, protective sheen.
Mounting the Shelves
To hang the shelves, sawtooth hangers are attached to the back of each hexagon. A small indentation made with a nail punch helps align the screws for easier installation.
This mounting method is strong enough to support small decorative items. It also keeps the shelves flush against the wall for a clean look.
Layout Options and Styling
One of the best parts of hexagon shelves is their layout flexibility. You can group them together in clusters or space them apart for a lighter, airier display.
Their shape naturally encourages creative arrangements. Whether hung above a desk, sofa, or in a hallway, they instantly elevate the wall space.
Why Try This Project?
These shelves offer a good mix of beginner-friendly woodworking with a polished result. It’s a small project that can have a big visual impact.
They’re also a great way to practice angle cuts and simple assembly techniques. With a few boards and a little time, you can create something that looks store-bought but feels completely personal.
