Floating shelves are an excellent way to showcase your favorite items while keeping your space organized. In this guide, we will walk you through the step-by-step process of building and installing these stunning floating shelves, even if you don’t have a professional carpentry workshop.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before starting your DIY floating shelves, you need to have the right tools and materials on hand. This ensures a smooth building process and helps you avoid any interruptions.

  • Tools Needed:
    • Miter saw
    • Circular saw
    • Table saw
    • Drills
    • Measuring tape
    • Pencil
    • Quick square
    • Safety glasses
    • Saw horses
    • Clamps
  • Materials Needed:
    • 2×2 planks (ripped from 2x4s for cost efficiency)
    • 3/4-inch thick oak boards (approximately $90 each)
    • Construction screws

Step 2: Build the Frames for the Shelves

Now that you have everything you need, it’s time to start building the frames for your floating shelves. This is a crucial step that sets the foundation for your project.

Begin by cutting your 2×2 planks to the desired lengths. Make sure that the width of your shelves will be consistent; for this project, a width of 10 inches is recommended. Use a chop saw and set up a stopper to ensure that all pieces are cut to the same length. This will save you time and provide uniformity in your frames.

Once you have all your pieces cut, start assembling the frames. Your basic frame should have a long piece at the back, one at the front, and supports on the inside. Ensure that the spacing between the supports is equal.

Before securing the frame to the wall, locate the studs in your wall. Mark these areas as they will be where you insert your anchors for maximum support. Pre-drill holes for the screws to prevent the wood from splitting, especially since the wood is on the thinner side.

Step 3: Cut the Shelf Planks

With your frames ready, it’s time to cut the actual shelf planks. The planks should be slightly wider than the frame; for this project, 12 inches is a suitable width.

Using a table saw, cut the long pieces for your shelves. Remember, you will also need to make 45-degree cuts for the front piece of the shelf. If you don’t have a table saw, a circular saw can also be used to achieve a 45-degree angle, but it will require more precision.

Step 4: Assemble the Shelf Planks

Now it’s time to assemble the shelf planks. Place the bottom piece of the shelf on a flat surface and apply wood glue to the seams. This will create a strong bond for your shelves.

After applying the glue, lay the top piece of the shelf on top and press down gently. Use a nail gun to secure the pieces together, angling the nails so they go into the inside of the shelf rather than popping out the front.

Step 5: Mount the Bracket for the Shelves

With your shelves assembled, the next step is to mount the bracket on the wall. Start by marking a horizontal line where the bracket will be placed, ensuring it aligns with the studs you marked earlier.

Pre-drill holes for the lag bolts, which will provide strong support for your shelves. Begin by securing the middle bolt first, leaving it slightly loose. This allows for adjustments when securing the other bolts to ensure everything remains level.

Step 6: Insert the Shelves

Once the bracket is securely mounted, slide your shelves into place. Double-check that everything is level and adjust if necessary before tightening all the screws completely.

It can be helpful to have a second person assist with this step to ensure that the shelves are held steady while you secure them in place.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

After securing the shelves, it’s time for the finishing touches. If you want to add extra stability, consider adding wood screws into the sides and middle of the shelves. Pre-drill these holes to prevent splitting.

Finally, take a step back and admire your work. The floating shelves not only serve a functional purpose but also enhance the aesthetic of your space.
