Looking for a quick and easy corner shelving project that’s perfect for beginners? This design was built and created by Steve Ramsey – Woodworking for Mere Mortals, and it’s a fantastic addition to any home.
Materials Needed:
- Half-inch plywood
- Pocket hole screws
- Wood glue (optional)
Tools Required:
- Circular saw, jigsaw, band saw, table saw, or hand saw
- Pocket hole jig
- Clamps
- Sandpaper
Step 1: Cut Your Plywood
Start by gathering some scrap pieces of half-inch plywood. Since this is a painted project, you don’t need to worry about grain direction or color matching. The main challenge is that every piece will be a different size. Begin by cutting out a bunch of rectangles and squares for the shelves. You can use any saw you have on hand.
Step 2: Create Curved Edges
For the square shelves, cut out curves that represent a quarter of a circle. To draw the circle, find the center of the square by connecting the diagonals. Use a beam compass to set the radius, then cut the curves using a jigsaw or band saw.
Step 3: Sand the Edges
Once you have your pieces cut, sand the edges to smooth out any rough spots. You can use hand sandpaper for this step, which is effective in giving the edges a nice finish.
Step 4: Join the Shelves
To assemble your corner shelves, use a pocket hole jig to create joints that will be hidden when installed against the wall. It’s a good idea to clamp the pieces together while inserting the pocket screws to prevent any sliding.
Step 5: Final Assembly
After allowing the joints to sit overnight, your corner shelves will be surprisingly strong. Now, you can finish assembling your shelves and make any adjustments as needed.
Step 6: Paint and Install
Once your shelves are assembled, you can paint them to match your decor. After the paint has dried, install your shelves in the corner using appropriate wall anchors to ensure they are secure.
And there you have it! A simple, elegant corner shelf project that adds functionality and style to your home.
