DIY Desk Under $50

Looking for a stylish desk project that won’t break the bank? This sleek design was created by DIY Creators, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to add a functional piece to their workspace without spending a fortune.

Materials Needed

  • 2 pieces of 2″ x 12″ x 8′ Southern yellow pine
  • 2 pieces of 2″ x 6″ x 8′ pine board
  • 1 piece of 2″ x 4″ x 8′ pine board
  • 1/2″ dowels
  • 2-1/2″ pocket hole screws
  • Wood glue
  • Minwax Espresso 273 Gel Stain
  • Oil-based white gloss paint (for finishing)

Tools Needed

  • Circular saw
  • Drill
  • Sander
  • Measuring tape
  • Speed square
  • Clamps

Step 1: Cutting the Boards

Start by cutting your 2″ x 12″ boards to the desired length for your desk. Mark at 29 inches on both boards and use a speed square as a guide to make your cuts.

Step 2: Creating Straight Edges

To create straight edges, attach a 2″ x 4″ to your table saw fence as a guide. Rip down the side of the boards to achieve a clean edge. If you have a jointer, that can make this process easier, but a table saw will work just fine.

Step 3: Marking for Dowels

Mark where you want the dowels to go by measuring 2 inches from each end and spacing them 10 inches apart. Use a dowel jig to drill the holes for the dowels.

Step 4: Assembling the Top

Apply wood glue to the surfaces and insert the dowels. Ensure everything lines up correctly, then clamp the pieces together. Allow it to set for a few hours, but be careful not to disturb it too much.

Step 5: Attaching the Legs

Next, focus on the legs. Use the same process to attach the legs to the desk top. Drill holes for the dowels and ensure everything is square for stability.

Step 6: Adding the Apron

Install an apron between the legs for added support using pocket hole screws. Sand down any rough edges to create a smooth finish.

Step 7: Finishing Touches

Once everything is assembled, it’s time to finish your desk. Apply a gel stain to the top and let it dry. For the legs, use a primer followed by an oil-based white paint for contrast.

Step 8: Adding LED Lights (Optional)

For a modern touch, consider adding LED lights. Run the LED strip across the apron and secure it in place. This adds a fun element, especially for a kid’s desk.
