DIY Compact Bread Slicing Guide

Paul from ToolMetrix has created this awesome DIY compact bread slicing guide that ensures you get perfectly even slices every time. This project is simple and can also be used for bagels and bread rolls, making it a versatile addition to any kitchen.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Wood panels for the body
  • Glue
  • Table saw or miter saw
  • Planer
  • Router with a quarter-inch round over bit
  • Band saw
  • Rubber feet
  • Sandpaper
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil for marking

Step 1: Preparing the Stock

Start by prepping your wood stock to create a simple panel. Decide on the design you want, similar to building a cutting board. Lay out the strips as desired and glue them together as you usually would for a panel.

Step 2: Determine Panel Thickness

Determine the thickness of the panel based on how thick you want your bread slices to be. Plan to achieve a thickness of 5/8 inch, which is ideal for most bread types.

Step 3: Clean Up the Edges

Once you have the final thickness, take the panel to your table saw or miter saw to remove the ends and get a square finish.

Step 4: Cut a Strip for Alignment

Using a stop block, remove a 3/4 inch strip from one end of the panel. Make a witness mark to ensure you can glue it back in the same orientation for perfect alignment.

Step 5: Create a Hanging Hole

Drill a one-inch hole for hanging the jig on the wall when not in use, or for carrying purposes. Round over the edges of the hole with a router for a smooth finish.

Step 6: Cut the Side Panels

Cut a board about nine inches long and a couple of inches wide for the side panel. Mark the height alignment and rip it on the table saw.

Step 7: Attach the Side Rails

Using glue and clamps, attach the side rails to the main panel, ensuring everything is well aligned to avoid extra sanding later.

Step 8: Sanding and Finishing

Sand all the edges and corners to make them smooth. Finish the project with a food-safe finish, such as mineral oil.
