This beautiful cedar loveseat was created by Nathan Builds, and it’s perfect for any outdoor space. This guide will walk you through the steps to create a functional piece that looks great with or without cushions.

Materials Needed:

  • 2×4 Cedar Lumber
  • Fence Pickets
  • TotalBoat Thixo Epoxy
  • Teak Oil

Tools Needed:

  • Table Saw
  • Track Saw
  • Circular Saw
  • Drill
  • Brad Nailer
  • Crosscut Sled
  • Clamps
  • Sander

Step 1: Prepare the Lumber

Preparing cedar lumber for the project

Start by cleaning up the rough-cut cedar 2x4s using a table saw. Rip them in half to create pieces that are about 1.75 inches wide.

Step 2: Cut the Pieces

Cutting the pieces to length

Next, cut all the pieces to the required lengths. This includes the legs, armrests, seat, and back sections. Use a crosscut sled for accurate cuts.

Step 3: Create Half Lap Joints

Creating half lap joints for leg and armrest connections

For joining the legs and armrests, use half lap joints. You can cut these joints using jigs made for your table saw or by adjusting the blade depth and making repeated cuts with a circular saw.

Step 4: Assemble the Legs and Armrests

Assembling the legs and armrests

Join the pieces using TotalBoat Thixo epoxy, which is more durable than traditional wood glue for outdoor projects. Make sure to fill any gaps for a strong bond.

Step 5: Measure and Cut Angles

Measuring and cutting angles for the seat and back section

After the legs are cured, measure where the seat and back sections will sit. Cut the necessary angles for a better visual and functional fit.

Step 6: Create the Seat and Back Sections

Creating the seat and back sections

Connect the vertical sections of the back and seat to the horizontal sections using pocket holes. Ensure the pocket holes are facing up since they will be covered by slats later.

Step 7: Attach Slats for the Seat and Back

Attaching slats to the seat and back

Ripped down strips from the fence pickets to use for the seat and back. Attach these using epoxy and brad nails, spacing them evenly as you go.

Step 8: Dry Fit and Secure the Legs

Dry fitting the legs and securing them

Dry fit the legs and drill pilot holes to secure them in place. Use epoxy for the front leg connection, ensuring everything is clamped securely.

Step 9: Add Drainage Holes

Drilling drainage holes in the legs

Drill holes in the front gap by the legs for water drainage, as this area can collect moisture.

Step 10: Final Touches

Applying teak oil to finish the project

Finally, apply a couple of coats of teak oil to enhance the wood grain and protect the surface. This step adds a beautiful finish to your loveseat.

And there you have it! A stunning cedar loveseat that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
