This DIY battery dispenser was designed and built by Fisher’s Shop, and it’s a fantastic addition to any home. This project not only provides a centralized location for all your batteries but also includes a small cabinet for storing tools and other battery-related items.
Materials
- (x1) Oak board (dimensions as needed)
- (x1) Acrylic sheet for sliding covers
- (x1) Brass hinges
- (x1) Magnet for cabinet closure
- (x1) Brass chain for cabinet door
- Walnut plugs for screw holes
- Danish oil finish
Tools
- Table saw
- Miter saw
- Band saw
- Drill press
- Spindle sander
- Planer
- Flush trim saw
- Clamps
Step 1: Prepare the Wood
Start by cutting off any cracked ends from your oak board and chopping it down to rough sizes using a miter saw for easier handling. Then, resaw each piece using a bandsaw to get closer to the final thickness.
Step 2: Dimension the Panels
Run the pieces through the planer to achieve their final thickness, taking light passes to prevent snipe. Use the jointer to clean up one edge, then rip the pieces down to their final width on the table saw.
Step 3: Cut the Dados
Cut the dados that will accept the dividers for the batteries. Each divider will have a curved dado cut on either side to accept the acrylic sliding covers.
Step 4: Assemble the Frame
Begin assembling the battery dispenser by gluing on the sides and fitting the back panels into their respective dados. Use a hammer for gentle persuasion, ensuring everything is square.
Step 5: Reinforce with Screws
Add screws for reinforcement. Mark the locations for the screws, drill out the holes, and fill them with contrasting walnut plugs for a nice finish.
Step 6: Add the Dividers
Cut out spacers for the various battery slots and glue in the dividers. Ensure that all batteries will sit flush with the front of the dispenser.
Step 7: Prepare the Acrylic Covers
Cut down the acrylic pieces and engrave various battery sizes using a CNC machine. Trim the strips to their final width and check for fit in their respective slots.
Step 8: Install the Cabinet Face
Trim the cabinet face to size and secure it with brass hinges. A magnet will keep the cabinet door closed, while a brass chain allows it to open 90°.
Step 9: Finish and Mount
Apply a dark walnut Danish oil finish to enhance the wood grain and protect the surface. Finally, mount the dispenser using a hidden French cleat for a clean installation.
Conclusion
Your new battery dispenser is now ready to use! This project not only keeps your batteries organized but also adds a beautiful touch to your home.
