This DIY patio chair was created by 731 Woodworks, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to enhance their outdoor space. Whether you’re a beginner or have some woodworking experience, this guide will take you through the steps to build a durable and stylish chair that you can be proud of.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 2×4 boards (3 pieces)
  • Wood screws (1.5 inches and 2.5 inches)
  • Wood glue
  • Sanding blocks
  • Drill
  • Circular saw
  • Speed square
  • Tape measure

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Before starting, gather all the necessary materials. The total cost for lumber and supplies came to just over $23, making this project budget-friendly. Matt picked up the supplies at Home Depot while on vacation in Destin, Florida, showcasing that you can build anywhere with a little planning.

Step 2: Cut the Wood

Once you have everything laid out, it’s time to cut the wood. Use a circular saw and a speed square to ensure straight cuts. Make sure to square up the ends of your boards as they may not be square from the factory. It took about 17 minutes to cut all the parts for the chair.

Step 3: Pre-Drill Holes

Next, it’s essential to pre-drill holes in the wood to avoid splitting. Use a countersink drill bit for this. This step will help hide the screws and create a polished look for your chair.

Step 4: Assemble the Frame

Begin assembling the chair by applying wood glue to every joint. Use the 2.5-inch screws to connect the 2×4 frames. For the seat slats, use the 1.5-inch screws. Make sure to leave a 1-inch gap between each slat for a uniform appearance.

Step 5: Cut the Backrest

For the backrest, cut a 15° angle on one end of the back upright to create a comfortable slant. This will help the chair sit correctly on the ground. Use the speed square to mark the angle and a circular saw for the cut.

Step 6: Attach the Backrest

Once the backrest is cut, attach it by sliding it into place. Drive screws from the inside towards the outside to hide them. This keeps the design clean and aesthetically pleasing.

Step 7: Add the Front Legs

For the front legs, glue and screw the uprights together and ensure they bottom out on the seat slats for stability. This will make sure the chair is sturdy and can support weight comfortably.

Step 8: Sand the Chair

After assembling the chair, it’s time to sand it down. Use sanding blocks to smooth out all rough edges and surfaces. This step is crucial to prevent splinters and ensure a finished look.
