Materials and Tools Needed:
- Black walnut lumber
- 2×4 lumber
- Wood glue
- Wood screws
- Dowels
- Insulation
- Silicone adhesive
- Pin nails
- Router
- Drill
- Angle gauge
- Clamps
- Saw (miter and table saw)
Step 1: Create the Inner Frame
Start by planing down some rough black walnut to create a sturdy inner frame that fits your vent hood insert. This frame will support the weight of the insert.
Step 2: Build the Outer Frame
Next, plane down some thicker walnut lumber to create the outer frame. To ensure uniformity, tape two boards together and cut them simultaneously.
Step 3: Assemble the Frame
Drill counterbores on each end of the frame to hide the fasteners. Use dowels to cover the countersunk holes, adding an attractive accent to the sides.
Step 4: Construct the Top Frame
Construct a basic 2×4 box for the top of the range hood, ensuring there is a cross brace to secure it to the ceiling. This structure will support the weight of the insert and create the necessary angle for the panels.
Step 5: Install the Vent Hood Insert
Install the vent hood insert inside your custom cover. Use L brackets for support along the front and sides. Make sure to check local codes regarding ducting requirements.
Step 6: Create the Herringbone Panels
For the front panels, rip down black walnut into 3/16-inch strips and arrange them in a herringbone pattern. Use wood glue and CA glue for a strong bond while the wood glue dries.
Step 7: Insulate and Attach the Panels
Stuff insulation around the ductwork to help dampen noise. Attach the herringbone panels using silicone adhesive and secure with pin nails.
Step 8: Finish the Hood
Ripped down a walnut board for the top and miter the corners to fit around the frame. Cover the corners of the panels with mitered strips of walnut to create a polished look.
Step 9: Apply the Finish
For finishing, apply a coat of osmopolix oil to enhance the beauty of the walnut. This finish will provide a protective layer while highlighting the wood’s natural grain.
Step 10: Tie in Your Kitchen Design
To unify your kitchen design, consider using the same herringbone pattern on your kitchen island or other areas. This will create a cohesive look throughout your space.
And there you have it! Your custom range hood is now complete. Enjoy your beautiful new addition and the satisfaction of creating it yourself!
