A Coffee Table Designed for Games and Puzzles

Drew created this coffee table as a multifunctional piece for puzzles, board games, and everyday use. What looks like a standard coffee table actually contains hidden storage, removable boards, and custom gaming trays designed to make game nights and puzzle-solving more convenient.

The table features drawers on both sides for organizing game pieces, a protected internal box for ongoing puzzles, and a convertible surface that allows for different uses. The removable boards can be flipped over to serve as gaming trays, making it a highly adaptable design for any home.

Preparing the Wood and Frame

To begin the project, Drew selected walnut lumber and milled it down to the proper size. He flattened and planed each board to ensure a smooth surface, then used a jointer and table saw to cut the pieces to their final dimensions.

The frame of the table was built using strong and precise joinery techniques. Mortises were cut into the apron pieces, and floating tenons were added using a router to reinforce the structure. Clamps helped secure everything in place while the glue dried, keeping the frame square and sturdy.

Building the Puzzle Storage Box and Drawers

One of the standout features of this table is the internal storage box, which keeps puzzles protected when not in use. The box was constructed using simple butt joints, reinforced with glue and brads for durability. Although the joints are hidden, Drew added decorative details for a refined touch.

For additional storage, smooth-gliding drawers were incorporated into the design. A magnetic featherboard helped ensure accurate cuts, and spacers were used to maintain alignment during installation. Playing cards acted as temporary spacers when attaching the drawer faces, ensuring everything was centered.

Crafting the Gaming Trays and Tabletop

The removable tabletop boards allow for easy access to the puzzle storage while doubling as gaming trays. Using a dish carving bit on the router, Drew created recessed sections in the trays to hold game pieces securely. Slots for cards and notches for dominoes were added, making the trays perfect for a variety of tabletop games.

The outer edge of the table surface was framed with miter cuts, giving it a clean and polished appearance. Careful attention to detail ensured a seamless transition between the top panels and the rest of the table.

Finishing and Assembly

Once the main structure was complete, a removable bottom panel was added inside the puzzle storage area. This allows for easy removal of completed puzzles without damaging them.

To enhance the natural beauty of the walnut, Drew applied a coat of Danish oil. This brought out the rich grain while adding a layer of protection. The entire table was then finished with three coats of water-based polyurethane, ensuring a durable surface that can withstand years of use.

A Table Built for Fun and Function

The final piece is more than just a coffee table—it’s a hub for family entertainment. The hidden storage, adaptable features, and quality craftsmanship make it a standout piece for game nights and puzzle-solving. Whether working on a complex puzzle or playing a favorite board game, this table is designed to meet a variety of needs.
