The Beauty of IPE Wood

IPE wood is prized for its rich color, extreme density, and resistance to moisture and decay. Often used for decking, it is one of the toughest hardwoods available, making it an excellent material for long-lasting outdoor furniture.

Its durability also makes it challenging to work with, requiring sharp tools and precise cuts. Despite the extra effort, the final result is a stunning and highly durable bench that will last for years.

Designing the Bench

Steve designed this bench to maximize the use of a single piece of two by six IPE wood, reducing waste while ensuring a strong structure. Sourcing high-quality wood from a reliable decking supplier helped maintain consistency in grain and finish.

The bench design balances function and aesthetics, creating a sturdy seating area with a well-supported backrest. Thoughtful material selection and efficient use of cuts helped keep the project streamlined and efficient.

Preparing and Cutting the Wood

To begin, Steve carefully measured and cut the wood to size using a circular saw, ensuring each piece was accurate. Since IPE is dense, a sharp blade was essential for making clean cuts without burning the wood.

Once the initial cuts were made, he used a jointer and sander to refine the edges and create smooth surfaces. These steps helped ensure that all pieces fit together properly before moving on to assembly.

Shaping the Legs and Frame

For the legs and frame, Steve used a combination of a bandsaw and a jigsaw to cut the necessary shapes. The bandsaw handled the curved cuts efficiently, while the jigsaw struggled due to the hardness of the wood.

Each piece was then sanded thoroughly to remove rough edges and create a consistent finish. Taking the time to shape and refine the legs ensured a professional-looking final result.

Constructing the Backrest

The backrest was designed with thinner slats to maintain strength while keeping the overall weight of the bench manageable. Each slat was resawed to the correct thickness before being shaped with a router.

Adding a 45-degree chamfer to the edges of the slats gave the bench a polished look. These small details enhanced the overall aesthetic while maintaining comfort and structural integrity.

Assembly and Joinery

Assembling the bench required precise alignment to ensure long-term durability. A dowel jig was used to create strong and accurate joints, keeping all parts securely connected.

Stainless steel screws provided additional reinforcement, ensuring the bench could withstand outdoor conditions. Double-sided tape helped keep everything square during the clamping process, allowing for a clean and stable assembly.

Applying the Finish

Once fully assembled, the bench was sanded again to remove any excess glue and prepare the wood for finishing. A coat of teak oil was applied to enhance the natural color of the IPE and add a layer of protection against moisture and UV exposure.

This step not only preserved the wood’s beauty but also extended its lifespan, making it a reliable addition to any outdoor space. Regular maintenance with oil will help retain its rich color over time.
