Step 1: Create the Chevron Pattern Seat

To start, rip your 3/4 inch plywood into strips approximately 1.5 inches wide. Using premium plywood will ensure a clean look.

Align the boards at a 45-degree angle using a large speed square. This will serve as a reference line during the glue-up.

Glue the strips together in small sections, ensuring to use a generous amount of glue since there are many mating surfaces. Clamp them and let them dry overnight.

Step 2: Finalize the Chevron Pattern

After drying, clean off excess glue with a chisel, then run the blank through the planer, taking shallow passes to avoid damage.

Next, cut the blank into strips at a 45-degree angle using a track saw or circular saw. Make sure to keep the pieces in order to maintain the chevron pattern.

Step 3: Shape the Seat

Once dry, use a circle cutting jig to cut out the seat from the chevron pattern blank.

Sand the edges smooth to remove any burn marks and fill any voids with glue and sawdust.

Step 4: Build the Stool Base

For the base, cut your 2×4 into sections for the legs and rungs. Start by squaring off one edge and ripping them into strips just over 1.25 inches wide.

Next, bevel the miter saw by five degrees to cut the legs at a compound angle for a raked and splayed design.

Step 5: Assemble the Base

Assemble the legs into an A-frame structure, positioning the top and bottom rungs. Use dowels for the joints, marking and drilling holes with a doweling jig.

Glue all joints generously, ensuring a strong assembly. After it sets, sand the edges to finish the base and apply a few coats of grey spray paint.

Step 6: Attach the Seat to the Base

Center the square base on the circular seat using tape as a guide. Drill pilot holes and attach the base with screws.
