This project was built and designed by Mark from Gunflint Designs. It’s a stunning end-grain cutting board with personal meaning, crafted from wood that carries decades of family history.
What makes this project special isn’t just the woodworking—it’s the story behind the materials. Mark used oak from a backyard tree tied to his mother’s childhood, turning it into a one-of-a-kind kitchen heirloom.

A Project Rooted in Family History
Mark began this project as a gift for his mother, who had mentioned wanting a cutting board nearly two years earlier. But this wasn’t going to be just any board—it would be made from a small oak tree that had grown in her childhood backyard.
That oak tree had a strange resilience, appearing to die off each winter only to sprout leaves again in spring. Its tight growth rings told the story of slow, dense growth, making it both physically strong and emotionally meaningful.
By choosing this wood, Mark ensured the finished product would be more than functional. It would serve as a reminder of home, family, and the passing of time—etched into every grain.
Preparing and Selecting the Materials
Oak is a classic choice for a cutting board thanks to its strength and durability. But when the material comes from a meaningful source, the stakes are higher and the care required even greater.
Mark carefully milled the boards, ensuring they were fully dried before beginning. Proper moisture control is key for cutting boards, as any trapped water can lead to warping or splitting down the road.
The wood was jointed and planed until the surfaces were flat and clean. With sentimental material, every cut matters—and each step was done with precision to preserve as much usable stock as possible.
Cutting and Building the Chaos Pattern
What sets this board apart visually is its chaotic end-grain layout. Mark cut the oak into small segments and arranged them in a seemingly random orientation, creating a patchwork that is full of energy and motion.
This style requires patience, especially when aligning dozens of individual blocks. Every piece must be square and glued tightly to ensure a flat, solid result once everything is assembled.
End-grain cutting boards are particularly desirable because they’re gentler on knives and resist deep scarring. The blade slips between the wood fibers instead of across them, which helps preserve both the board and your tools.
Sanding and Surface Prep
Once the glue-up was complete, the cutting board went through several rounds of sanding. Mark used a combination of tools to flatten and smooth the surface, removing glue residue and evening out subtle inconsistencies between blocks.
Sanding a chaotic end-grain board can be tricky. The mix of grain direction causes sanding dust to behave differently across sections, and there’s more resistance than on face grain. But the extra effort pays off with a silky finish and sharp contrast between blocks.
Oil and Finish
After sanding, Mark applied mineral oil to saturate the board and bring out the rich tones of the oak. This step deepens the natural color and helps protect the board from water and food stains.
To seal and protect the wood long term, regular re-oiling is recommended. Mark’s finish gives the board a soft luster and enhances the tight grain pattern created by the oak’s slow growth.
Personal Touches and Meaning
The most impactful detail of this build is its connection to family. By using wood from his mother’s childhood home, Mark created a board that’s as much a memory as it is a tool.
The board’s chaotic pattern adds an artistic flair, but it’s the story that sets it apart. It’s a reminder of time spent together, of shared roots, and of the quiet strength passed down through generations.
Challenges Faced and Lessons Learned
One of the biggest challenges was ensuring the wood was fully dry before use. Working with improperly seasoned material could have led to cracks, gaps, or uneven glue joints.
Another hurdle was aligning so many small end-grain blocks. Slight variations during milling or glue-up can throw off the final pattern, but Mark took the time to test-fit everything before committing to the final layout.
The payoff was a board that’s not just usable—it’s beautiful, balanced, and full of history.
Music and Atmosphere
As with many of Mark’s recent videos, calming background music enhances the viewing experience. His partnership with Audioblocks gives him access to copyright-safe tracks, adding polish to his content without worrying about takedown notices.
Mark credits Audioblocks for not only the quality of music but also their customer service, which helped resolve copyright concerns quickly so he could focus on the creative side.
A Lasting Gift with Meaning
The finished board is now in his mother’s kitchen, used and appreciated every day. It’s not just a gift—it’s a legacy item, built with care and intention.
This project shows how woodworking can go beyond the shop. It can preserve stories, connect generations, and create something that lasts longer than any one of us.
