With built-in drawers, a bookcase staircase, a headboard with LED lighting, and a pull-out hamper, the Ultimate Bed lives up to its name. It’s a showcase of thoughtful design and practical woodworking.

Project Overview
The Ultimate Bed includes six drawers, a hidden laundry hamper, built-in shelves, and soft lighting. This design helps maximize storage without sacrificing comfort or style.
Each feature was planned to be both functional and accessible for a growing child. From bedtime stories to toy storage, everything has its place.
Material Prep and Setup
Drew started by unloading sheets of plywood and dimensional lumber into the shop. He used a layer of foam board on the work surface to protect both the material and his tools during cuts.
This setup kept the plywood stable while allowing smooth, splinter-free cuts. It also helped organize the workflow before getting into more complex joinery.
Cutting and Shaping the Pieces
A track saw was used to break down the plywood with precision. The clean edges and straight cuts helped everything fit together later without extra sanding.
Additional cuts were made on the table saw and miter saw to prepare parts for assembly. These tools allowed for quick adjustments and consistent dimensions.
Assembling the Drawers
Using a pocket hole jig, Drew drilled all the necessary joints for the drawer boxes. This method provided strong, hidden connections that were easy to clamp and secure.
Drawer sides were assembled first, followed by gluing and nailing the bottoms into place. Each drawer was checked for square before being set aside to dry.
Building the Dresser Frame
For the dresser section, Drew laminated interior panels to add rigidity and clean surfaces. Pocket holes were added to the backs to make final assembly straightforward.
He also added internal dividers between drawers. This gave the structure strength while keeping items separated and organized.
Constructing the Bookcase Stairs
The stair unit was built from individual boxes, stacked to form a safe and functional set of steps. Each box was assembled with glue and screws for durability.
Maple plugs were used to conceal exposed pocket holes, creating a seamless look. Careful measurement ensured each step was aligned and square.
Creating the Headboard and LED Lighting
The headboard included a built-in channel for LED lights. Drew used a jigsaw to rough-cut the shape, then refined the edges with a router for smoothness.
The LED lights were securely mounted and wired into the frame. This added a soft, inviting glow perfect for bedtime reading.
Sanding, Staining, and Sealing
Once everything was assembled, Drew sanded the surfaces thoroughly, rounding over sharp edges for safety. He applied a wood stain that brought out the grain without overpowering the design.
Multiple coats of water-based polyurethane were added to seal the surface. This provided protection from wear and tear while maintaining a clean, satin finish.
Final Assembly and Installation
The final step was bringing all the components together. Large bolts secured the bed sections to one another, making the entire structure solid and stable.
Each feature worked exactly as planned, from the drawers to the lighting. The completed bed offered plenty of function without feeling bulky or cluttered.
