Step 1: Preparing the Legs
Start by cutting the legs for your workbench. You’ll need to create dados to hold the bench frame and the tool storage shelf. Use a radial arm saw with a dado blade to make these cuts.
Step 2: Creating the Feet
Cut a half-inch deep dado in the feet to stabilize the bench. Chamfer the edges to prevent stubbing your toes as you walk around the bench.
Step 3: Assembling the Frame
Assemble the frame using two by fours. Ensure each piece fits snugly into the dados you’ve cut. This includes the pieces for the vise and bench dog assembly.
Step 4: Cutting the Top
Attach a piece of three-quarter inch plywood and a quarter inch hardboard for the top. Cut a slot for the bench dog assembly using a table saw and finish with an electric jigsaw.
Step 5: Attaching the Oak Banding
Cut and attach the oak banding around the edges of the top. This will protect the edges and add durability.
Step 6: Installing the Bench Vise
Drill a hole for the bench screw and attach the vise to the wooden block. Secure it with carriage bolts, ensuring it moves smoothly.
Step 7: Making the Bench Dogs
Create bench dogs from oak, cut to shape and attach a spring piece to hold them in place. These will fit into the clamping slots on the bench.
Step 8: Finishing Touches
Chamfer any sharp edges on the bench for safety and ease of use. Your bench is now ready for use!
With Norm Abram’s guidance, you can build a durable workbench that will serve your workshop needs for years. Enjoy your new workspace!
