Why Build an Indoor Putting Green?

Adding a putting green to your basement or indoor space is not only fun but also beneficial for golf practice. Drew’s innovative design takes the concept to the next level by incorporating features like an automatic ball return and a custom-built ball elevator.

Having a personal putting green at home means you can practice anytime, improving your skills while enjoying a fun and relaxing activity. Plus, it’s a great conversation piece and entertainment option for friends and family.

Creating the Sturdy Framework

Drew began this build by constructing a robust frame from strong lumber, designed to withstand frequent use. He used 2×6 boards and included cross-bracing every 16 inches for stability, ensuring the putting surface would remain level and solid over time.

At one end of the frame, Drew created an extended landing area, adding additional space for putting practice. This thoughtful design enhanced usability, making the overall putting green practical and comfortable.

Clever Tools and Techniques

Throughout the construction, Drew utilized helpful tools like a magnetic screwdriver to simplify assembly. The strong magnetic feature allowed him to install screws easily, freeing up his hands to position boards securely.

Using straightforward tools and techniques, Drew ensured the framework was structurally sound. Careful attention to alignment and accurate measuring helped create a solid foundation for the rest of the project.

Designing the Ball Return System

An essential feature of Drew’s design is the automatic ball return system. He cleverly engineered this system using PVC piping, carefully installing it within the structure to ensure golf balls would smoothly roll back after each putt.

Drew strategically angled and secured the pipe to maintain a consistent slope, ensuring balls would reliably return. This innovative feature significantly enhanced the convenience and functionality of the putting green.

Preparing and Installing the Surface

Once the frame and ball return system were complete, Drew carefully measured and cut sheets of wood to serve as the putting surface. He added a slight slope to guide balls towards the center, ensuring they easily entered the return system.

After attaching the putting surface securely, Drew applied adhesive and carefully rolled out artificial turf. He trimmed the edges for a neat finish, then installed MDF sides to give the green a polished, professional look.

Adding the Innovative Ball Elevator

Perhaps the most exciting part of Drew’s putting green is the custom-designed golf ball elevator. Drew designed and constructed a clever lever-operated mechanism that raises golf balls into position, providing easy access for the next shot.

This feature is not only practical but adds a unique, interactive element to the putting green. Drew ensured it operated smoothly and consistently, adding cushioning to the lever handle for comfort during repeated use.

Finishing Touches and Enhancements

Drew took care to sand and finish all visible surfaces, adding primer to protect the wood and give a clean appearance. These finishing touches ensured durability while enhancing the visual appeal of the finished putting green.

He also mentioned the possibility of adding additional features, such as fun obstacles, allowing the putting green to be customized further. This flexibility makes the design adaptable for both serious practice sessions and casual enjoyment.

Why You Should Consider Building This Project

Building your own indoor putting green with Drew’s design can provide countless hours of entertainment and valuable practice time. The addition of creative features like an automatic ball return and elevator system sets this project apart, making it both enjoyable and practical.

Whether you’re an avid golfer or simply looking for a fun woodworking project, this putting green is rewarding and versatile. Drew’s detailed approach makes this project accessible to woodworkers of varying experience levels.
