This project was built and designed by Drew Fisher from Fisher’s Shop. It’s a practical way to maximize the space under a workbench with smart storage features and clean design.

The cabinet includes a pullout shelf for power tools, a deep drawer for clamps, and several smaller drawers for tools and accessories. A hidden drawer adds an extra layer of function, making this a versatile upgrade for any shop.

Starting the Build

Drew begins the project by breaking down sheet goods into manageable panels using a track saw. These panels form the main structure of the cabinet and set the tone for the layout.

Plywood is cut into all the necessary components for the sides, bottom, top, dividers, and interior sections. When available, reclaimed wood is used to reduce waste and add character to the build.

Cabinet Construction

To ensure a strong, square frame, Drew uses a combination of dados and rabbets for the joinery. Glue is applied to each joint, and the dividers are seated into place.

Parallel clamps help keep the cabinet aligned as the glue dries. Once the internal dividers are in, the top and bottom panels are added using the same method.

Side panels are then secured to the structure, completing the main box of the cabinet. This method makes assembly smooth and provides lasting durability.

Adding Decorative Edge Banding

To match the look of the main workbench, Drew applies walnut strips to the exposed plywood edges. These thin strips help hide the layers of the plywood and elevate the cabinet’s appearance.

Bandy clamps hold the strips in place while the glue sets. This small touch ties the cabinet visually to the rest of the bench and gives it a clean, finished look.

Constructing the Drawer Boxes

With the main frame complete, attention shifts to the drawers. Each drawer box is glued and clamped in place, then fastened using brad nails for quick and secure assembly.

Drew installs undermount drawer slides that offer soft-close functionality. Because these slides require less drawer height, the boxes are made slightly shallower than standard builds.

Installing Drawer Faces

Drawer faces are added next, using playing cards as temporary spacers to maintain even gaps. This simple technique ensures a consistent reveal between each drawer front.

Once aligned, the faces are clamped, adjusted, and then fastened securely. The result is a seamless, professional appearance that feels custom-made.

Crafting Custom Drawer Pulls

For the drawer pulls, Drew creates a unique walnut design that echoes the curves found elsewhere in the bench. Each pull features a coved groove for grip and a shape that mirrors the dust tray elements.

Mounting holes are drilled, and the pulls are installed using screws hidden behind maple dowels. This technique keeps hardware out of sight while adding a nice contrast to the dark walnut.

Pullout Shelf and Reinforcement

The cabinet also features a pullout shelf, designed to hold small power tools or accessories. To add strength, Drew installs angled supports beneath the shelf for added stability.

This pullout section makes it easy to access tools while working and keeps the bench top clear. It’s a thoughtful addition that adds real function without taking up more space.

Final Finish and Installation

To protect the wood and highlight the natural grain, Drew finishes the cabinet with Danish oil. This oil-based finish provides a subtle sheen and enhances the warmth of the walnut.

Once dry, the entire cabinet is slid into place beneath the workbench. Everything fits tightly, and the modular layout allows for efficient storage and easy access.

What the Cabinet Includes

The finished cabinet includes four drawers in the center section for tools and supplies. A pullout shelf above provides room for power tools, while the deep drawer below stores clamps and larger gear.

A hidden drawer adds an extra layer of storage for important or frequently used items. The cabinet blends clean lines with practical design, making it a smart addition to any shop.
