Simple Wine Rack

In this project, DIY Pete shares a straightforward approach to creating a functional wine rack that can hold six to eight bottles of wine and six wine glasses underneath. This project is not only practical but also adds a touch of elegance to any kitchen or dining area.

Tools and Supplies Needed

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Drill
  • Jigsaw
  • Orbital sander
  • Air nailer or hammer and nails
  • Kreg jig (optional but recommended)
  • Clamps and square
  • Handsaw, circular saw, or miter saw

For supplies, ensure you have:

  • Wood glue
  • Screws and nails
  • Drill bits
  • A finish – Pete used Minwax Polyshades for a durable and attractive finish.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Cutting the Wood

The first step involves cutting the 1×4 boards. You will need to cut:

  • Five boards to 30 inches long
  • One board to 27 inches long
  • Two small pieces that are just 2 inches long

Using a miter saw is the easiest option, but a circular saw or handsaw will also work.

2. Preparing the Wood

Once the boards are cut, use an orbital sander to smooth out any rough edges. Focus on the edges and flat surfaces.

3. Rounding the Corners

To create rounded corners, use an old paint can or coffee can as a stencil. Trace around it and then use a jigsaw to follow the lines.

4. Cutting Notches for Wine Glasses

Measure and cut notches in one of the 30-inch 1×4 boards to hold the wine glasses. Make sure to check the size of your wine glasses to ensure a proper fit.

Mark the following positions for six holes:

  • 4 inches
  • 8.25 inches
  • 12.75 inches

Drill 3/8-inch holes at these marks and then cut out the notches with a jigsaw.

5. Assembling the Wine Rack

Start by attaching the shorter 27-inch board between the two 11-inch 2x4s. Use a Kreg jig to create pocket holes for a strong connection. Apply wood glue and secure with screws.

6. Attaching the Back Boards

Next, attach the three 1×4 boards to the back of the rack. Space them evenly and secure with glue and either screws or nails.

7. Adding the Front Board

Once the back boards are attached, flip the rack to the front side and add the front board in the same manner.

8. Finishing Touches

After ensuring everything fits well, it’s time to sand the entire rack for a smooth finish. Then, apply the Minwax Polyshades for a rich color and protective coat. This product serves as both a stain and a sealer, making the process simpler.

9. Mounting the Wine Rack

Once the finish is dry, drill pilot holes to mount the wine rack to the wall. Ensure you hit the studs for a secure fit using 3-inch wood screws.
