Starting the Build

Sam begins the project by flattening and cutting the wood to size. Each piece is prepped with efficiency in mind, using only the materials needed to form a solid box frame.

The simplicity of the structure makes it ideal for a smaller workshop. Fewer pieces mean quicker assembly and fewer complications during construction.

Constructing the Box Frame

With all the pieces ready, the main box is assembled by joining the sides and bottom. Care is taken to make sure the base is square and flush, providing the foundation for the entire build.

This early step is key to the project’s overall stability. A clean and accurate assembly ensures the box sits flat and opens properly when finished.

Adding the Bottom Skirt and Top Panel

A skirt is added around the bottom edge to reinforce the structure and improve its appearance. Sam uses hardwood here to increase durability and help the box handle daily use.

For the top, he repurposes a leftover piece of wood from a previous project. This not only adds visual contrast but also makes efficient use of scrap materials.

Preparing the Finish

Once the structure is complete, the entire piece is sanded thoroughly to smooth out all edges and surfaces. A clean surface is important for both the finish and any later engraving work.

Sam applies a polycrylic finish, chosen for its satin appearance and protective quality. It helps bring out the natural grain while guarding against wear from regular use.

Engraving for a Custom Touch

To personalize the box, Sam engraves the top using a CNC machine. This allows for clean, consistent lettering that adds sentimental value to the project.

After engraving, the letters are filled with black paint to increase contrast. The combination of texture and tone makes the name stand out while keeping the design clean.

Final Assembly and Hinges

Soft-close hinges are installed to secure the lid. These help prevent the lid from slamming shut, which is especially useful in a household with young kids.

The slow-closing action also adds a sense of quality and care to the finished piece. Once attached, the lid opens and closes smoothly, completing the build.

Why This Project Works

This toy box is a great way to combine woodworking with function and creativity. It adds useful storage while providing a meaningful gift that feels custom-built for the family.

Whether placed in a nursery, living room, or play area, the simple design fits in almost anywhere. The personalized engraving makes it even more special and memorable.
