The Concept
Drew wanted to recreate a ping pong table that combined functionality with nostalgia. The original table had a clever folding mechanism that allowed it to be stored compactly while still opening up to regulation size. To understand how the folding mechanism worked, he built a mock-up using Lego pieces, helping him visualize the mechanics before cutting into wood.
Choosing the Right Materials
For durability and stability, Drew selected high-quality plywood for the table structure. The first step was breaking down large sheets into manageable sizes, using a track saw to ensure precise cuts. With space constraints in his shop, this approach allowed him to work efficiently without needing a large cutting station.
Constructing the Table Frame
The table’s base and legs required careful shaping to match the original design. To achieve the right contours, Drew printed a stencil and refined the pieces using a band saw and belt sander. For added strength, he laminated multiple layers of wood for the outer legs, ensuring they could support the weight of the table.
With all components cut and shaped, he assembled the frame using pocket hole joinery. Clamps helped keep everything square while securing the structure, ensuring a stable and level playing surface.
Building the Tabletop
For the playing surface, Drew enhanced the plywood with a border made from black walnut. Once the pieces were glued and dried, he carefully sanded everything to create a smooth finish. The two halves of the tabletop were designed to fit together seamlessly when opened, maintaining the traditional dimensions of a ping pong table.
Adding the Finishing Touches
To give the table a sleek and modern appearance, Drew applied a flat black paint finish. He also installed leveling feet on the legs, allowing the table to remain stable on uneven surfaces. These small details ensured that the table was both visually appealing and functional for gameplay.
Testing the Folding Mechanism
Once the assembly was complete, Drew tested the table’s ability to fold up for storage. The mechanism worked exactly as intended, allowing for easy folding without compromising stability. Seeing the design come to life was a rewarding moment, and the table was soon put to the test with a few rounds of ping pong.
As a tribute to his grandfather, Drew incorporated a small but meaningful detail—one of his grandfather’s old brass screws. It was a personal touch that honored the original inspiration behind the project.
