Building a Farmer’s Sink Cabinet

This farmer’s sink cabinet was designed and built by Giles Woodworks, and it’s perfect for any kitchen setting.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Plywood (for cabinet structure)
  • Pressure-treated wood (for sink support)
  • Wood screws
  • Wood glue
  • Pocket hole jig
  • Clamps
  • Saw (table saw or circular saw)
  • Drill
  • Measuring tape
  • Level

Step 1: Measure and Plan

The first step in building your farmer’s sink cabinet is to ensure you have the sink on hand for accurate measurements. This is critical to ensure that the cabinet is built to fit the sink perfectly. Take precise measurements of the sink and create a full-scale drawing to visualize the assembly.

Step 2: Build the Cabinet Structure

Start by constructing the main cabinet structure using plywood. This will provide a sturdy base for the sink. Remember to use pocket holes for joining the pieces, as this will create strong joints.

Step 3: Create the Sink Support

Use pressure-treated wood to build ledge pieces that will support the rim of the sink. These pieces must be robust enough to handle the weight of the cast iron sink. Ensure they are waterproof to prevent any damage from leaks.

Step 4: Assemble the Cabinet

With all pieces ready, it’s time to assemble the cabinet. Make sure to leave the toe kicks off until all cabinets are leveled and secured together. This will make the process easier and ensure a better fit.

Step 5: Install the Sink

Carefully lift the sink into place, ensuring it fits snugly on the ledges you built. It’s essential to have a slight gap for airflow to prevent water from accumulating on top of the cabinet doors.

Step 6: Final Touches

After the sink is installed, the plumbers will caulk around the edges to secure it in place. Ensure everything is aligned properly and that the weight of the sink is resting on the supports as intended.

And there you have it! Your finished farmer’s sink cabinet is ready to be integrated into your kitchen design.
