Building a Cherry Step Stool

This step stool design was created by Fisher’s Shop, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to enhance their workshop or home. With an integrated set of steps that fold out, this stool doubles as a step ladder, making it a versatile addition to your space.

Materials and Tools Needed:

  • Cherry wood
  • Wood glue
  • Wood screws
  • Danish oil for finishing
  • Drill and drill press
  • Miter saw
  • Table saw
  • Band saw
  • Router with flush trim bit
  • Clamps
  • Sanding tools
  • Measuring tape and square
  • One-two-three blocks for layout

Step 1: Prepare Your Wood

Start by cutting your cherry wood down to the appropriate lengths and widths. Since the piece may have twists, use a miter station to chop it down and then flatten it using a planer sled.

Step 2: Cut the Legs and Top

Use the miter saw to cut the legs to final length, then set your table saw to cut the half laps and notches needed for assembly. This will ensure a stable structure.

Step 3: Assemble the A-Frame

Spread glue on the joints and assemble the A-frame. Use clamps to hold the pieces together while the glue dries.

Step 4: Create Notches for Braces

Once the glue has dried, cut notches for the cross braces. This will add additional strength to your stool.

Step 5: Install the Cross Braces

Drill mounting holes for the braces and counterbore them for a clean finish. Spread glue and insert the braces, securing them with screws.

Step 6: Create the Stool Seat

Glue together pieces of live edged cherry for the seat. Once dry, sand the edges for a smooth finish and attach it to the frame.

Step 7: Make the Steps

For the steps, glue together pieces to form stringers. Cut them to length and create a template to ensure uniformity for future projects.
