Building a Budget-Friendly Planter Box

This project is by Wes from Woodworking With Wes. This DIY planter box is not only budget-friendly, costing less than $20, but also provides a beautiful addition to your outdoor space just in time for spring planting.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

To build your planter box, start by gathering the necessary materials. You will need:

  • Two 2×4 boards (from your local big box store)
  • Wood glue or construction adhesive
  • 2-inch nails
  • Woodworking tools (including a miter saw and router)

With everything ready, you can begin crafting your planter box.

Step 2: Cut the Wood to Size

Decide on the dimensions of your planter box. For this project, we will create a box that measures 17 inches square and 15 inches tall. Start by cutting your 2×4 boards into the following dimensions:

  • 4 pieces at 17 inches (for the sides)
  • 4 pieces at 15 inches (for the height)

Step 3: Smooth the Edges

Once your side pieces are cut to length, you will want to smooth the edges. This not only enhances the appearance but also provides a better fit when assembling the pieces later on. Cut down the edges to 3 inches wide using your miter saw.

Step 4: Create Finger Joints

To add a decorative touch and strengthen the joints, we will create finger joints at the ends of our boards. Set your saw blade high and use a stop block to control the depth of your cuts. This will prevent the blade from cutting too deep into the wood.

Step 5: Cut the Joint Slots

After setting the blade height, proceed to cut the finger joint effect on the ends of the boards. Make sure to cut all slots on one side first, then switch to the other side. This step requires precision, so take your time and focus on safety.

Step 6: Clean Up the Edges

After cutting, you’ll notice some small notches left from the saw. Use a file to clean these corners, ensuring they are crisp and ready for assembly. This is essential for achieving a tight fit when the pieces are put together.

Step 7: Chamfer the Edges

Next, we will add a decorative chamfer cut to the edges of our boards. Install a 45-degree chamfer bit in your router and carefully route around the edges of your pieces to give them a polished look.

Step 8: Assemble the Planter Box

Now that all pieces are prepared, it’s time to assemble the planter box. Start with the bottom piece and work your way up, applying a bead of construction adhesive at each joint. Use your nail gun to secure the pieces together with 2-inch nails.

Step 9: Attach the Top Cap

After assembling the main structure, cut a top cap that fits over the planter box. This piece should be slightly larger than the opening of the box to create an overhang. Secure it in place with adhesive and nails.

Step 10: Final Touches

Before placing your planter box outdoors, consider applying a sealant or stain to protect the wood from the elements. Options include boiled linseed oil or a clear deck stain. Choose a finish that suits your style and enhances the beauty of the wood.

Conclusion

Congratulations! You have successfully built a beautiful planter box for under $20. This project not only adds charm to your garden but also showcases your woodworking skills. Enjoy planting your favorite flowers or herbs in your new planter box!
