This simple modern bench was created by Rad Dad Builds, and it’s a fantastic addition to any space.
Materials and Tools Needed
- White oak
- Wood glue
- Domino joiner (or screws and plugs)
- Wood clamps
- Miter saw
- Table saw
- Planer
- Jointer
- Figure eight connectors
- Sandpaper
- Osmo oil (for finishing)
Step 1: Prepare the Wood
Start by breaking down your white oak into pieces that are slightly larger than the required dimensions for the A-frames and stretchers. Use a miter saw to cut the wood down to size, making sure to leave some extra length for adjustments.
Step 2: Mill the Wood
Run the cut pieces through the jointer to flatten one side and create a square edge. Then, use the planer to achieve a thickness of just over 1.25 inches. Finally, use the table saw to cut the pieces down to a width of 2.5 inches.
Step 3: Assemble the A-frames
Cut the components for the A-frames, including the top and vertical pieces. For the vertical pieces, cut an 82-degree angle on the top and bottom to ensure a proper fit. Dry assemble the A-frames to check the fit before moving on to joinery.
Step 4: Join the A-frames
Using a domino joiner, create joints between the top section and the legs. If you don’t have a domino, you can use glue and screws for a strong connection. Once assembled, ensure everything is square and aligned.
Step 5: Add the Stretchers
Cut the stretchers to length and attach them to the A-frames using dominoes or screws. The top stretcher should be installed flat, while the bottom stretcher is installed vertically.
Step 6: Install the Braces
Add two 45-degree braces between the stretchers for added stability. Cut and attach them securely to the A-frames.
Step 7: Prepare the Bench Top
Select two pieces of white oak for the top of the bench. Mill them to the desired thickness and width, and join them together using dominoes for alignment.
Step 8: Attach the Top
Use figure eight connectors to attach the top to the base. This allows for wood movement during different seasons. Once attached, give the entire bench a good sanding.
Step 9: Finish the Bench
Apply Osmo oil or your preferred finish to enhance the wood’s natural beauty and protect it from wear. Once dry, your bench is ready for use!
Now you have a stunning modern bench that you can proudly say you built yourself!
