Build Strong and Stylish Planter Boxes

Looking to spruce up your garden, patio, or balcony? In this guide, John McGrath from Man In Shed shows you how to build sturdy planter boxes that are not only functional but also visually appealing. This easy-to-follow tutorial will help you create planter boxes that will last for years to come.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • Pressure-treated timber (4×2 and 6×2)
  • Polythene liner
  • Screws (40mm recommended)
  • Screw gun
  • Measuring tape
  • Miter saw or circular saw (or handsaw)
  • Clamps
  • Stapler

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Start by picking up some pressure-treated timber from your local builders’ provider. You’ll want lengths that are manageable for your vehicle—16-foot lengths can be cut down to fit. Pressure-treated wood is recommended for outdoor projects as it lasts longer.

Step 2: Cut Your Timber

Using your miter saw, cut down the timber into lengths that will form the frames for your planter boxes. Plan for the height and width of your planters, typically aiming for a total height of around 24 inches.

Step 3: Assemble the Frames

Next, start assembling the frames. Create L-shaped legs using three screws in each joint. This will give you both stability and a solid base for your planter boxes.

Step 4: Create the Base

Now that your frames are assembled, it’s time to add the base. Cut additional boards to fit inside the frame, spacing them evenly to allow for drainage. If you don’t have a pocket hole jig, screw them in from the side, which will be hidden once the planter is filled.

Step 5: Add the Plastic Liner

To prevent soil from escaping through the gaps, line the inside of your planter with a durable polythene liner. This will help retain moisture while allowing for proper drainage. Poke a few holes in the liner to facilitate water drainage.

Step 6: Final Touches

Your planter boxes are almost complete! Now, you can add a decorative trim around the top. You can choose to paint the planters for a splash of color or leave them natural for a rustic look.

Step 7: Fill and Plant

Finally, fill your planter boxes with compost and soil. Choose your favorite flowers, herbs, or vegetables, and get planting! These sturdy planters are built to last and will enhance the beauty of your outdoor space.
