Looking to transform that unused space under your kitchen sink into practical storage? This project, created by Kyle from DIY Buildouts, showcases how to build four sliding drawers that not only maximize space but also bring organization to a previously chaotic area.

Materials and Tools Needed

  • 3/4 inch thick Baltic birch plywood
  • Birch veneer for edge banding
  • Drawer slides
  • PVA wood glue
  • Clamps
  • Iron and painter’s tape
  • Table saw
  • Drill
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Prepare Your Materials

For this project, Kyle chose 3/4 inch thick Baltic birch for the sides and the base of the drawers. While typical cabinets use a thinner material for the bottom, he opted for thicker plywood to ensure rigidity.

Step 2: Assemble the Left Side of the Cabinet

After cutting the materials, the left side of the cabinet was assembled. It’s important to let the glue dry for about 24 hours before proceeding. Kyle also planned to edge band the plywood with birch veneer to give it a more finished look.

Step 3: Edge Banding Application

To apply the edge banding without making a mess, Kyle shared a pro tip: cover the iron’s face with foil and painter’s tape to avoid getting glue on it.

Step 4: Constructing the Upper Left Drawer

For the upper left drawer, Kyle faced a challenge due to a lack of a right slide mount option. He solved this by doubling up the framing on the left side, which added rigidity to the structure.

Step 5: Installing Risers for Dishwasher Hose

To accommodate the dishwasher hose, Kyle installed 3/4 inch risers for the drawers. This allowed for easy access and adjustment of the hose, ensuring everything fit perfectly.

Step 6: Final Assembly and Installation

With the bottom drawers installed similar to the left side, Kyle demonstrated the completed project, emphasizing how to effectively utilize the space under the sink.

Step 7: Tips for Complex Fits

One of the most complex parts of this build was fitting the drawers next to the kitchen disposal and face frame. Kyle highlighted the importance of taking accurate measurements to ensure a snug fit.

By following these steps, anyone can enhance their kitchen storage with sliding drawers. This DIY Buildouts project not only maximizes space but also brings order to a previously chaotic area under the sink.
