Why Build Overhead Garage Shelves?

Garage storage can quickly become a challenge, especially when floor space is limited. Johnny designed a shelving system that takes advantage of unused space above the garage door, creating an efficient and cost-effective storage solution.

By utilizing overhead space, these shelves help keep frequently used items accessible while storing seasonal or infrequently used bins safely out of the way. This project is a great option for organizing plastic storage bins, tools, and other household items.

Planning the Build

Johnny started by clearing out the workspace to get a better idea of where the shelving would go. Using design software, he mapped out the shelving dimensions to fit standard plastic storage bins, making sure to allow enough clearance for easy access.

With the design finalized, he selected dimensional lumber for the framework and plywood for the shelves. His goal was to use materials efficiently while maintaining a strong and stable structure.

Installing the Shelf Supports

To begin construction, Johnny mounted horizontal support pieces along the garage wall, securing them to the studs for maximum strength. He used long screws to fasten the supports, ensuring a sturdy base for the shelving framework.

After installing the wall supports, he attached vertical uprights to create the main structure. Pre-drilling holes before driving in screws helped prevent splitting, making assembly smoother.

Building the Shelving Structure

With the framework in place, Johnny added additional support by securing another horizontal beam to the bottom of the uprights. This reinforced the overall structure and created a solid mounting point for the shelving material.

For the shelves, he used half-inch plywood, cutting it to size with a track saw. The plywood was then secured to the framework using trim head screws, which allowed for a flush and clean finish.

Expanding Storage Along the Garage Walls

Once the first shelving section was completed, Johnny repeated the process along a longer garage wall to create additional storage. He used a laser level to ensure everything remained aligned and straight throughout the installation.

For the overhead shelving above the garage door, he modified the upright lengths to prevent interference with the door’s movement. Carefully measuring and notching the plywood allowed for a custom fit around any obstructions.

Final Adjustments and Storage Setup

After installing all shelving sections, Johnny made adjustments to leave room for future workshop equipment. Keeping part of the wall open ensured that lighting and accessibility were maintained while still maximizing storage.

The completed shelving system transformed the space, providing a clean and organized solution for garage storage. The entire build was completed at a relatively low cost, proving that with good planning, an efficient storage system can be built affordably.
