- ~240 – 2.5” long screws
- 24 – 27-gallon totes
Tools Required
- Hand Saw
- Drill driver
- Tape measure
- Optional: Miter saw, Pocket hole jig, Pocket hole screws
Step 1: Planning Your Storage Rack
Start by assessing your space. Since my new garage has less storage than my previous one, I decided to build a simple storage system. The concept is straightforward: create two ladder-like structures with cross pieces to hold the totes.

Step 2: Cutting the Lumber
For the vertical pieces, I recommend using 2×4 lumber. However, since my ceiling height is only 8 feet and 1.5 inches, I opted for 1×4 for the top and bottom to fit snugly. Mark out the positions for the cross pieces, starting with the first one at 14 inches and the subsequent ones at 16 inches apart. The top piece should be around 15.5 inches for better wiggle room.

Step 3: Assembling the Frame
It’s best to build the front and back portions of the frame on the ground and then lift it up. If space is limited, you can use a pocket hole jig to create holes in the face of the 2x4s and build it in place. The edges of the totes will sit on these cross pieces, which should be 30 inches long.

Step 4: Ensuring Proper Spacing
When measuring for the spacing of the totes, make sure to allow for some wiggle room when sliding them in and out. In my case, I left 21 inches for easy access. After assembly, check for stability. If it rocks a bit, you can secure it to the ceiling joists for added support.

Step 5: Attaching the Rack
In my setup, I had to attach the rack to the ceiling instead of the back wall due to some pipes. Make sure to use appropriate screws for the material you’re attaching to. If you’re working with concrete, consider using concrete screws for stability.

Conclusion
This DIY Tote Storage Rack not only helps organize your garage but also maximizes your storage space. With just some basic tools and materials, you can build your own system tailored to your needs. For more details and free plans, check out Build It Make It.
